TR4/4A TR4A fuel starvation.

Replaced original fuel pump ,(with primer lever) for an aftermarket pump w/o priming lever. Having trouble pressurising from outlet tube to fuel line and then on to the Carbs.
Put her away pretty dry , so I put a couple of gallons of gas in the tank before starting.
Maybe I need a little more in the tank to cover the sending unit? I'll be darned if I can put my finger on the problem.
At least the install went smoothly and fuel color in bowl and filter are nice and clear.
Any Thought's?

Thanx

Going to a larger olive that will cover the exposed end of the outlet tube.

These pumps are supposedly self-priming but I have had a problem getting one going after a replacement with a low fuel level in the tank.

I always carry a cheapo electric pump as a get-me-home spare so I used that between the metal fuel line and the carb connection to suck some fuel thru the pump and up into the line -- after that it was fine.

I now have an old style pump with priming lever on both TRs -- an example of where the original part design was clearly superior to repros. Any particular reason why didn't you just rebuild the old pump?

First, pull the fuel line and let it flow into a can. Is it a nice smooth stream or a dribble??? The one thing the fuel pump cant do is suck!!There must be a nice flow into the pump inlet. If not I suggest new fuel lines and tubing from the tank to the pump,no filters till after the pump!!!!!
If the pump still cant do the job, its bad...

Aloha Winston,

The pump is self primiming because the pump is slightly lower than the fuel tank when the car is level, therefore gravity feed. Like Geaorge, I had a problem getting my TR3A restarted with not much gas in the tank and parked on a slight incline (engine up the hill). It started up easily after I rolled to level ground. Mad Dog is right about fuel filters, if you haven't traced the fuel line between the tank and pump do so and remove any filter that may have been installed. Often, the lines have been cut in places and hoses inserted for various reasons so make sure that any hoses are not kinked or pinched.

Better late than never.
Received aftermarket fuel pump, (vendor replaced one originally sent). I found the top of the Cam Eccentric by feel and installed with little or no difficulty.
Aftermarket pump works fine. Now a brief note to purist's, here I go again with design change, I rebuilt the entire fuel delivery system from the tank outlet pipe to the Strombergs. I used 5/16th fuel injection hose with a billet filter right before the carbs.
I'm almost ashamed to say this but ole Ruby never ran this well before.
I would still like to find a top of the original fuel pump, (bottom OK) top inlet threads blown to bits by PO. Maybe I'll go to classifieds, or perhaps one of you kindly Triumph lovers has a blown bottom sittin on the bench.
