TR4/4A TR4 Rear End Again

After boasting of the great job I did on the rear cover plate of the differential, it now appears I may have a leak in the front seal where the driveshaft connects.

I'm not looking forward to confirming that, but I assume it will be no small job when I get to? Remove entire rear end?

btdt. If you can get the car on a lift, it is a pretty easy job to change out the real seal. See this post:

KVH -- At least 2 of our local club members have lifts... might be able to wangle some time on one of them.

Maybe even call it an official tech session (though usually there is someone present at those who has actually done the job before).

In any case, I would be willing to help -- if we don't break your car then I will do mine too.

The slide hammer is key to getting the old one out. Make sure to buy NEW lock nuts for the propshaft before you start. You will need 8 3/8"-24 nuts.

Often the sealing surface on the flange is rough and pitted. If is is too far gone to dress with emery paper, a speedi-sleeve ($35 from Moss) installed over the flange will give you a permanent repair for proper sealing.
