TR2/3/3A Tr3A project Continues... Carbs and Fan Relay

I really got a lot accomplished this weekend... Got the drive shaft out Fri evening and I had to cut one of the bolts with an angle grinder! Job done... Threaded the bypass and put in a flow restrictor.. ordered a new hose and clamps today.. Fitted the new headers and carbs... need to move the passenger side heater fitting to make room for the TR4A manifold..Working on that this week... Got the choke figured out.. Headers were sent to Jet Hot today... Raditor with fan is in and only needs a couple of wires connected to be functional, I decided to get power from the horn as it has a 35 amp circuit and I won't have to run a wire to the fuse block. I picked up power for the relay from the + side of the coil...It's only on when the key is on...I have all the right and left side side done.. I disconnected and plugged the pressure switch and rotated the brake lines 90 degrees to give room for the headers. I'm going to put a manual brake switch on the petal... I found a bad wire in the harness and stripped it back then covered it all with shrink tubing... I also covered all wiring bend over clips with shrink tubing... Really looking good I think!

Here's some pictures of the progress....

Now I'm taking a couple of weeks off... Need to teach a few classes to make some more money.. and am headed to Mexico for Rooster fishing for Xmas... Hope to have this running by the middle of Jan...

I sent my own fan to be mounted and had a temp sensor installed...on at 185 off at 175.. cost was around $450...

Looks great. I'm pulling the apron when I get home to pull the rad. I have a stock recored (no crank hole) rad to put in but was thinking of using the TR6 fan instead of the elec. Still can't make up my mind. I can still convert the belts to 1/2 in using the Rev crank pulley that allows the fan extension. Decisions, decisions.

The TR3A I finished in June came with exhaust headers and the owner wanted to keep them on the car. Because these exhaust headers extend out and then curve down, the TR3A intake manifold had been removed and replaced with a longer manifold from a TR4. After re-mounting the carbs from the TR3A, there was no space for the original air filters. So we bought some (see attachment) and modified the hole and mounting nut locations so they would fit. The last thing we did before shipping it back to the owner was to install these fabricated air filters. The owner was running the car in September and thinks the small opening for the air might be causing air starvation and he says he can't get it to run very well. Before we had put on the filters, it went like a bomb, so maybe he has to investigate it more next spring.

Hey Don. How about building a custom air box with a remote filter. That way you can increase the air chamber size and move your filter up front.

The Triumph Register of Southern California website has a tech article about using the H6 carb with the longer 4A manifold. If you can score a set of HS's, you may have enough room for larger aircleaner.

H6 vs HS6

Mark & Bill - The problem is no longer mine, but I'm always willing to help out the owner of that TR3A if I can. He is 360 miles from where I am. He could just remove the air filters. That's the way it was when it came to me 8 years ago this week for the full restoration. When I restored it, I felt it should have some sort of filter set-up and that's how I did it.

As for Capt Roy, my idea was to let him know about a possible problem if he had not yet forseen it yet.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I have the HS6 carbs off a TR4A along with the manifold. I'm going to call Ted at TSI tomorrow to see what K&Ns I can use. I know someone used crossland filters but I'm not sure of the quality as the are only 13.00 each from Moss. Heck(or another word), they may let a stone through! If anyone has a TR3A with TR4A head, long flow manifold and HS6 carbs please let me know what you came up with!

Thanks Guys,

Roy,

We're running K&Ns on the 3A with HS6 on a TR3 manifold. The K&Ns are the 1-3/4"H filters and there is only 1/2" clearance to the inner fender at the front carb.

Crosslands are just foam and K&Ns would be my choice if they fit.
