TR2/3/3A TR3 Wiper Motor

I'm redoing the wiper motor on the TR3, and I bought a set of brushes from Moss, as the originals are just about worn down to the brush holder. I trued the armature in a lathe, and generally cleaned everything up. It works fine, but I haven't put the new brushes in yet, as they have a feature on them that isn't apparent on the old brushes.

They have three grooves in one end. Now, those grooves have to either go up against the brush holder or against the commutator. What are those grooves for, and which way do they go?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'm sure that I'm probably wrong, but I wouldn't think that it would matter as long as they were making good contact.

I thought about this for awhile, and decided to put the grooved end of the brushes inside the brush holder. These aren't just some superficial grooves, they are pretty deep V-grooves. Since the brush holder is just a sheet metal stamping, having more "legs" to contact the surface made more sense then putting that uneven surface next to the commutator.

After I put in the new brushes, the wiper motor definetly had a lot more zip, and seemed to run alot smoother. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif
