Aloha All,

On a TR3 (pre TS60000)the guide plates that are attached to the car by machine screws. I can not see the interior side of screws. I am assuming that there are caged nuts for those screws. Can anyone confirm this for me?
 
They are either caged or welded on. You won't have to access anything in the back.
 
I believe there is a welded plate for them - no cages to deal with for those attachments.

Here's one still spot welded to the remains of the scuttle panel.

If I ever remove mine I think it will be with a drill -- those flat-head screws (on mine) look like thay will never yield to conventional tools.

I let TS39781LO go to the crusher with one of them still in place. The other one came loose with a hand impact tool. Probably the first time they had ever been off, I found pale yellow paint (which I believe was the car's original color) under the one I got off.

They are welded in place. A cage nut has some movement. These guys don't move at all. And yes, not accessible from the backside.

Let me know if you want a pic. I've got easy access at present.

Easy access isn't so easy. I just snapped this picture (of my '59 pre 60k). My front fender is removed (and the plate) and the camera barely fits under the edge of the cowl and the panel that is the inner fender/foot well. It is not visible from inside the car because it's covered by another panel. Anyway, you can see the nuts are welded to a plate between the panels.

Thanks for the photo and all responses. Assuming I can remove the screws, do you know if that plate is aattached to the body or will it fall free? I have a problem (undetermined what it is) with one of the dzus fastners so I think may need remove the guide plate for inspection.
 
The plate is spot welded to the body. The location is not accessible without surgery. I used a large socket driver ground to fit the slot in the bolt that holds the stanchion, and an impact wrench. They came right out (perhaps just lucky). As indicated in previous replies, the plate cannot be easily replaced.

I just realized after replacing the A post and inner bulkhead that I do not have a backing plate on the driver's side of a pre 60K TR3. Is there a way to replace this plate without either cutting the scuttle, or cutting the inner bulkhead?
