Is the water pump pully supposed to be black, gray or natural? I've checked a lot of old posts - lots of info on water pumps but nothing on pully color.

Thanks in advance,

The assembly on mine (pulley and hub) is the color of the oil filter housing and some pieces on the front suspension - a light blue.
1960 TR3A.

Hello Luke

Here an excerpt from the TRA judging guidlines:

"Water Pump and Pulley and Fan Belt. No changes (ref: SPCEd4, pg. 9). The water pump, body, and pulley may be left unpainted or painted black. A grease nipple should be installed on the upper RH of the pump."

We went with basic black.

If you bead blast the casting, it will come up very nice grey colour, but you will need to coat it with something to prevent rust. Same thing for the steel pulley, which we painted black.

Luke for what it's worth mine, is black. According to the TRA judging standards and restoration guidelines the pump and pulley should be either black or unpainted.

Cheers, Tinkerman

As long as I can remember (52 years for my 1958 TR3A), the pulley and pump have always been black. Never had any comments from TRA judges as to it being black - or any discussions about any other colour.

I have a pump/housing/and front TR3 fan hub in a light blue sitting in boxes. I always figured someone grabbed a spare rattle can and painted them during a rebuild. Maybe not?
