Does anyone know what attaches to the short (1/8”) post sticking out the bottom of my speedometer to roll back the odometer? The attached photo shows this post. I presume the extension rod that extended down through the dash panel bottom with a knurled cap is missing or broken off. Did that extension attach to this short post? Is a replacement available anywhere? Or do I need to invent such a rod and means of attachment?

You are correct...and yours is broken at the usual place. The extension is held with a little wire clip, and the tiny hole for the clip is the weak spot, so the rod breaks right through the hole. The fix (aside from buying a new extension), is to drill a new hole just a bit farther up the shaft.

Now I was down to "buttoning up" the tach. After everything else I did, this is both easy and fun. Here is the quick and dirty: First, the assembly we have been calibrating goes back in the case. You will likely be confused, like me, as it can go in both the right way...and upside down...

The end extension piece that is not shown has the threads for the little screw. If you find the knurled end piece you are missing, you can probably make a rod because the very small screw passes through the hole in the rod to the end piece. The speedo looks like an early one 1958 or earlier with the cast pot metal maybe aluminum housing. The odometer rod would need to be early also to work, but again you can make that. I would concentrate on getting the very end piece, an early one. I saw one on eBay a while back. You might be able to reset it with some small needle nose.

Interesting, Steve. I've never seen a complete original one...I had no idea it was threaded.

Thanks, fellows. This is helpful.
While planning my approach to fixing this reset shaft, I turned the short nipple with a small screwdriver. The broken off end left a slot. Dumb question: which way do you turn the odometer reset shaft, or does it turn the mile dials in either direction?

Okay, thanks for this. I noticed that the short nipple pushed up against a spring. I suppose that engages the gears. I’ll try to move the mile numbers before I go to the trouble of attaching a new extension shaft extending below the dash.

West Valley Instruments in Reseda, CA has what you are looking for. I just had them clean up and service a TR3 Tach and Speedo for me. The speedo had some home made reset shaft on it which they replaced. Just received them 2 days ago and haven't installed yet but the look EXCELLENT. Talk to Becky she will help you out.
