TR2/3/3A Tr3 club Toyota conversion

Was Rube Goldberg involved in this conversion? Was this done just to prove it could be done, or was there another message here? I wouldn't trust the shaft alignment on a bet. How about metal fatigue due to welding on the two different compounds of aluminum? Oh well, to each his own.

Paul,
I'll try to answer this in a straightfwd manner.
1. economics- The Toyota 5 speed, new driveshaft for the same, and the German Bastuck rack and pinion that are now on my car cost less than the HVDA kit alone. (the HVDA is a great kit)
2. The alignment isn't that hard and the welding of the bell is done by a pro at a fabrication/machinest shop. If the Toy mainshafts slides easily thru the properly aligned clutch into the crank and you tighten the housing down and everything moves nicely you are within spec...it's not the space shuttle.
3. Any master welder can weld similar alloys of this thickness, problems are only an issue on very thin alloy dissimilar welds with little weld bearing surface.
4. I only have 2500 miles on the tranny conversion, which works flawlessly, but I'll let you know if there are issues.
5. If your question is "Why do something yourself when someone else can do it for you", I can't answer that one.
