I wanted to mention that I broke the code on that latch assembly. I'm sure a lot of you guys already knew this, but I'm slow sometimes.
I thought a lot about what Viv said about the side curtains sagging the door so it would close the bottom gap and scrape the sill. I figured there had to be a method to stabilize the door. Of course...it was already there. Here is a photo of the rear part of the latch assembly on the b pillar:
It is tapered from outside to inside. Here is the matching forward latch:
It finally occured to me that the bent lips that I am pointing to are meant to be bent to match the rear latch. I confirmed this when I compared the left and right latches and found they were both bent slightly differently. I worked the lips until the dor is totally locked from vertical movement as the latch locks. If I put weight on the door to make it sag while I close it, the latch picks it up and puts it right in place, with no way for it to scrape the sill. Of course, it took a while to get it to work with no bind or rattling.
