TR5/TR250 TR250 Tranny woes

Took the TR out for a nice 40 mile ride Sun morning. All was good in the world till I went to back into a spot for a cup of coffee. As I went to put the car in reverse the tranny seemed to bind up, the shift was sort of "stuck" felt as though it was jammed in 2 gears at once. Then the big problem was when I let off the clutch the car wouldn't move! felt like it was in forward & reverse. I think the shift rails got out of sync. I had this happen to me one other time. After messing around with the shift for 5 mins it finally cleared up & was ok the whole way home. I think a rebuild is on the way as 2nd gear has always crunched on the downshift & pops out under load some times.
Any input would be appreciated.

If the car pops out of gear and crunches, your synchro ring is gone. Make sure that when this is replaced, they inspect the actual gears, as well as check the bronze bushings. These bushings go, and then you can pop-out under deceleration (like my TR3 does!)

Pull the top cover off the unit and look the shift forks over closley. There is something wrong here and you may be able to fix it with a donor cover.
Then of course you may need major work also, so look the gears and syncro's over too. Drain and re-fill the box, this is a good place to use a little STP mixed with the 90wt (3 to 1).

Does your TR250 have overdrive. The condition you describe could occur if you try to use reverse while overdrive is engaged.

A big no-no with the Dtype and Jtype ODs, maybe others. Don't use reverse with OD engaged, it may knacker your diff!
