sorry about the caps. i thank you for the help. i probably have messages all over the place because i don't know how to use the site. the site seems hard to use and understand, i know it is just me and my mental. i found this by accdent.

No problem, Thomas. Like most other things, as you continue to use the forum, you'll get more comfortable with it.

As for the heater, it's a big job, as others have said. The heater valve in the TR8 I had was bad, and once replaced, there was no problem.

I hope I didn't scare you away from doing it. The biggest issue in accomplishing the task was getting in and out from under the dash. I am getting to that age when small things in dark quarters are hard to see up close  Couple that with me being claustrophobic and it wasn't my favorite job to do.

I waited until I put in new carpet because I was worried about coolant all over the interior once the hoses were disconnected. A small bucket contained the liquid with very little spilling.

Total time to do the job was about two hours. That included me drilling a hole in the back of the valve flange for mounting purposes.

Claustrophobic!!You a pilot. How do you get in the cockpit

I am afraid of heights too....go figure...Actually no one is afraid of heights really. We are just afraid of falling

My issues arise in tight quarters where I can not move freely. Stuffed under the dash creates that for me and I tend to have to do work in spurts.

For the record, I didn't buy a Cessna 340 because I was just to tight in the cockpit. I am A OK IN the Seneca, Chieftain, Cheyenne or 414 though.

The reason the valves leak is simply old age. There is a plunger that moves when you actuate the heater control lever. This plunger regulates the hot water flow to the heater core. The plunger is sealed with a rubber washer. Over time the rubber degrades and no longer seals around the plunger. In theory you can buy a rebuild kit, disassemble the valve, replace the washer, and reassemble. I've tried. It is darn near impossible, and as a plumber, I do this kind of stuff all the time. Take my word for it, if you try to rebuild it, you will most likely destroy it.

It must be another one of those parts that deteriorates with non-use. The original valve is still pluggin along in my 32 year old TR8 with 170,000 miles on it. The heater does get used all the time though.

Of course now that I put thoat out there it will probably douse my feet with hot water/coolant tomorrow morning.

My valve is starting to leak to.
Guess it's time for a Dr. appt.

I can see me buying those in the Safeway line.

I think that is the biggest key. Cycling it is actually helpful. Mine died becuase I rarely use it. When I finally did open the valve, it just fell apart.

Thank you for the photoes. I have a heater unit I will check out the valve and see if it is good. I also have the leak on the other side as well. I will start on the heater when it gets warmer also. I have the top off the engine bay empty, and the seats out so I am good to go. Thanks for the info. Tjkj

Hi, I am thomas371948 known as tjkj. I used to have 3 studs a 551,52, and 53. I had this hill that none of these cares could go up with out a running start. I loved the hill holder it was awsome. I also had a 48 stud. and it was beautiful. I was 16 at the time. the interier was perfect the body jet black with no scratches, my aunts car broke down and she totaled it. I was heart broken. tjkj

Best thing to do is "IF" you have removed the AC system to install a non-AC heater core. Best thing I ever did! Plus its about 15 pounds lighter......if one counts!
