TR2/3/3A tr-3a Voltage Regulator

Just the environment will do, as the regulator has no other way to know what the temperature of the battery is. And the numbers aren't intended to be all that precise (hence the range of +/- 0.3 volts for each value). I was just trying to simplify the way the book gives it and restate in units more common in the US. The conversion from Celsius to Fahrenheit is what gives the strange temperature readings.

Oh, and I did make a goof, the lowest reading should be 32F, not 42F. If it gets down to 14F where you are working (which is way too cold for me to attempt such fine work), you could add another 0.3 volts.

PS, the book also cautions to complete the setting within 30 seconds (of starting the engine), as otherwise the regulator will warm itself up and change the readings. My opinion is that a minute would still be OK. Obviously you start with it cold, not just after a run.

Randall,

Thank you for your patience with my total ingorance in these matters. You have shed light on the subject and I now think I can tackle this task.... when the temperature returns to about 50 degrees F or higher! For a displaced Arizonan, these eastern temperatures are far too low for me in which to do any meaningful work.

I have worked on and fixed most every part or component on a triumph or british sports cars in general and have had success (many failures as well of course) with every one except for differentials (never tried) and voltager regulators (I think I have made about 3 attempts) no success on the regulators, I can never get readings and behavior anything like what the manuals say, always end up giving up or hiring out or buying another new or used one and mucking up the one I have.

I know that is of no help, other than to say proceed with caution.

Sorry, I don't know the wrench size offhand. There might even be an SAE size that would fit, I just grabbed a couple of ignition wrenches out of my Whitworth drawer and used the one that fit. 4 BA is close enough to 1/4" and that might be it.
Finally got a chance: 1/4" AF will work fine on the control box I checked.
