TR2/3/3A TR-3A Gauge Restoration - Questions

Rained all weekend so I thought I would dig into the gauge rebuild.
Sorry I can't offer a photo - I left my digital camera in Swindon, following my trip to Stoneleigh. Waiting for FedEx to deliver it. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif
BUT
When I disassembled the fuel gauge I noticed that it had a strip of light blue tinted plastic around the inner circumference. I am assuming that this is intended to allow light from the dash bulbs in and dirt out of the gauge. Is this assumption correct???The other small gauges, temp, oil pressure and ammeter also had plastic strips, but they were (maybe 50 years ago) clear. The tach and speedo did not have this plastic strip.

The condition of the bezels on the small gauges is OK. However I need new bezels for both the speedo and tach. I specifically looked for these at Stoneleigh with no luck. Does anyone know of a source of new bezels?
Cheers Frank /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thankyousign.gif

Are used bezels O.K.? If so, I'll look in the Lab if the temperature ever warms up. No promises.

Frank - the plastic strip assumption is correct. However, on my TR all four are clear (well, kinda dirty clear ...).

Be *real* careful about the tiny wires inside the fuel gauge. Are you planning to calibrate the gauge?

Tom: Yes, I noticed - looks like a hair!!!

Calibration? What's involved? Can you elaborate?

Frank - IF it needs calibrating ... Barney Gaylord has a great easy to follow technique for it:

I only did mine because it showed Full when filled, but stayed there until almost empty, when it quickly dropped to E for the last few pints.

P.S. The Lab???

Yes, The High Speed Triumph Research Laboratory, Soggy Bottom Facility.

Known informally to the Boffins as simply "The Lab".

And with this recent rain, the bottom is indeed soggy!

Nisonger Instruments carries the current crop of bezels new.

Actually most of the "new" Smiths suppliers carry them.

All sizes and colors and "V" configurations.

I got my replacement bezels from someplace out west. Don't remember offhand. I would avoid Nisonger. I got a few bulbholders from them that weighed a few ounces and they charged me over $12.00 to ship them to me. I won't be going back. Ernie Knight
