Small victory. Finally got the edges, gaps etc near perfect (which they never were from the factory) so I treated myself by installing the badge and letters. See photo. Tom

very nice!!

I assume your car must be a later 3A pre 60000? I'm going on the blue badge, wide letter combo. Correct?

Depends on the comission # of your 59. 1959 had a transitional badge blue, white and black across the bottom. Late 1959 also used the 2-color clute & white badge.

This one is TS60851L and was built in 1959 but registered/titled as a 1960. I have 3 TR-3s, but only this one is at the house. The other two I think have red badges. I bought this particular car in 1966 or 67 as a total wreck from the high school shop teacher. Rebuilt it with parts from junk yards (the joy of being young, short on funds and having a simple car). I drove it until 1978, parked it and am now building it again. No telling what badge it had new but holes on this apron that could have come from anywhere are drilled for these letters. I probably have 4 or 5 aprons in addition to the ones on the cars. I have 1958 my father bought when we returned from Cuba in 1959. He was a navy pilot stationed in Cuba and when Castro over threw Batista the civilions came home because Castro shut of the fresh water supply and at the time de-salinization ships were not effiecient enought to produce fresh water for Navy personnel and all their famiies. This car is pure and has never been hit etc. I will restore it too someday but have a few projects before it. Next is probably a 1960 Porsche 356 or a 1963 Buick Wildcat I have stored. I want to do an XKE (I also have one of these in storage) but may put it off until I am retired.

TR3A apron letters changed from ribbed to smooth around TS72K. Nobody bothers much though which letters you use. My early 3A was rebuilt with a NOS Stanpart apron which I drilled for the later letters because I preferred them. Years later I'm still waiting for someone to pick it.

Viv,

The TRA guide shows somewhere around TS50000 for the switch to thin smooth letters? My car (TS51339L) which seems to have the original bonnet based on what appears to be the original Silverstone Grey paint underneath has thin smooth letters which matches.
