I need to replace my rear axle pinion seal, and I need a special tool to keep the flange from turning as I loosen the retaining nut. In the service parts catalog, I think it's called the "wrench, bevel pinion flange" and p/n 18G84A. Anybody got one of these or a suitable alternative tool?

When I did the same job I simply put a bolt through one of the pinion holes with a link of chain and a nut. Then I ran the chain over to one of the mounting nuts and secured it. This keeps the flange from turning as you loosen the nut.
Hope I described it good enough; if I can find a pic I'll post it.
 
If the chain doesn't work, an impact wrench will pop it right off.
 
I used a piece of bar stock and drilled 2 holes to line up with 2 of the U joint mounting holes. You will want something pretty secure when tightening it since you will not want to change the preload ANY or you will ruin your diff.

I like your suggestion about drilling a piece of bar stock. Also, thanks for the warning about preload. The shop manual says the torque on the retaining nut should be 140 foot pounds. Before I go much further, I better make sure my torque wrench can go that high.

IIRC the 140 lbs was for initial construction - I don't think you need to go that high to replace the seal.

Agree with JP....just don't exceed 140...or for safety, don't get too close.
