I don't use Haines...I use the factory workshop manual.
But I just pulled an old Haines off the shelf & read what you said...factory manual doesn't mention anything about that!

No...when I installed my flywheel, I didn't see the little "1/4" mark on its edge so I just fitted it with the #1 piston at TDC in the position as when the machine shop balanced everything...Jack told me over the phone that I needed to find that "1/4" mark & reinstall the flywheel with it at the top...neither of us realized the flywheel could be installed in different positions...as I studied my flywheel closely, I found part of the "1/4" mark...what happened to it was that was one of the places where they had to drill the edge of the flywheel to balance it so all that's left is the "1" & half the "/".GeeBee1 said:

Reason I didn't worry about the "1/4" mark (other than that I couldn't see it) when I put everything together is because when the machine shop balanced all my reciprocating parts, they marked the ends of my crankshaft & flywheel the way they were bolted together when they balanced the engine (they didn't worry about where the "1/4" was - or they didn't know about the "1/4" since they'd balanced the flywheel right where it was)....they "0" balanced each item & then hooked up each item individually & spun tested them untl they had the entire reciprocating assebly together.
...so, the back end of both my crank and flywheel are now marked by the machine shop the way they want them to go together & those new marks become my new "1/4" (& on the backside of my flywheel the machine shop made a black mark that points straight up when the #1 piston is at TDC).
Does that make sense?
