I was shocked to see the email from Basil. I have known Tony for a few years now. I even met him while I was researching moving to Gurley. I know this will leave a void not only in his family, but in his extended family here at BCF.

Tony, I salute you. Rest in peace my friend.

...Semper Fidelis...

I have just received the email from Basil and just feel numb. Dont know what to say as Tony was one of the back bones of this forum. He will be sadly missed as he was always there to help when it was required. My thoughts are with his family and hope and pray his wife gets well soon. Please pass my condolences to his family. Although I am in Australia I feel as Tony was a mate and could be relied on to help when he could. Its just too sad. John

Tony was a real friend and go-to guy for my mother and I in our various MG projects.

Dad and I even drove up to his house and bought a car from him.

Our whole family has known him for a few years, and we are shocked and very saddened about hearing this just this evening. I am still numb from hearing about this, and will be for some time. Couldn't ask for a better human being.

We will keep his family in our prayers.

Very, very sad. A friend of mine owns a MGB so I often go to the MG forum and read what's up and read Tony's posts. Vary helpful and knowledgeable man. Very sad to hear this. My condolences to his family and my prayers that his wife gets better soon.

Dreadful, tragic news. I bought several parts from Tony, and had lots of help from him for my MGBGT "Harold" - I will cherish the green hat he sent me, and think of him whenever I wear it. RIP Tony.

Just a quick update --

Jerri had a pretty good day and managed to eat jello, broth, and tomato soup. She is receiving excellent care at Huntsville Hospital and is scheduled for L1 spinal fusion on Friday. Shannon and I plan to spend tomorrow making arrangements for Tony, and we are anticipating a service in Huntsville some time early next week. In the meantime, the following notice is scheduled to appear in the Huntsville Times and the Birmingham News tomorrow:

Anthony Leo (“Tony”) Barnhill, 63, of Gurley, Alabama, passed away on Monday, January 25, 2010. A native of Starkville, Mississippi, he served twenty years on active duty in the United States Army and National Guard. He fought on behalf of his country in the Vietnam War, in which he was awarded the Purple Heart, and in the Gulf War. He lived in many different states and overseas before settling in Gurley in 1993 to establish the Army Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) program at Buckhorn High School, from which he retired in 2004. He loved his family, God, and country and was passionate about collecting and restoring MG Cars, a hobby through which he made countless friends around the United States and the world. He was a colorful and faithful member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Gurley. He was preceded in death by his mother, Clauise White Barnhill and his beloved mother-in-law Bernice Holbert Owens. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jerri Owens Barnhill of Gurley; daughter Shannon Barnhill Lisenby (Jeff) and grandson William Patton Lisenby of Birmingham, Alabama; father William Wade Barnhill of Starkville, Mississippi; and siblings in Mississippi. Memorial arrangements remain pending. Friends are invited to make memorial contributions to Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 223 Section Line Road, Gurley, Alabama 35748.

Everyone has said everything. I have not been very active on the board in a while but I remember Tony fondly. He was helpful and supportive when I was hit in my BGT a couple years ago and I remember talking to him on the phone about parts.

His website always cracked me up. I hope they have MGs in heaven so he can complete his collection.

Mostly, I wish his family well - it's going to be tough. It sounds like he was much-loved and the community will be there for them.

Wow!How did one man do so much?I truly feel unworthy
of the few hours I spent at his home.I wasn't aware of
the many things he did in his life.
Here was a guy who handshake (or word) was a contract.
We should all (within reason)act this way.The world would
be a much better place.
He gave me a Green hat when I visited him.I will never
part with it.In fact,I'd like to get one for each car.....
but that'd be like 10 hats!
Jerri - I hope you recover.Will,Shannon,Jeff,as a Grand-
father,I'm wonder how Will willever understand "where Grandpa is"?

A man who told it like it is, did not suffer fools gladly, yet always helpful and knowledgeable.
The world can't afford to lose people like that.
What a shame.

It is with the greatest sadness that I read the email about the passing of
Tony Barnhill. Although reasonably new to the BCF I have read many of Tony's posts and like others found them to be extremely helpful I regret that I and many others didn't get to meet Tony.
In Australia we call men like Tony "Good Blokes" and no matter what Tony will always be a Good Bloke.I hope Jerri recovers soon and offer my condolences to her and the children. Tony will be sadly missed by us all.
One day I'll get to meet him up there so till then I'll say see ya later mate.
Ross.

Numb, shocked and deeply saddened. Condolences to his family and may God be with Jerri, both will be in our prayers.......

I wanted to express my hearfelt condolences to the family of Tony. My father, Jack Farrington, was friends with Tony as they had a great deal in common (both LTCs and loved British Cars). May he rest in peace.

It's terrible to hear of the passing of Tony; such a shame.

When I joined the MGB Experience 10+ years ago it was great fun to read the exchanges between Tony and Gary. The help Tony was always willing to give was appreciated.

About 2001 I was working at the pulp mill in Stevenson, AL. I called Tony up and drove over to meet him and see the garagemahal. It was a fun afternoon. What a collection of cars and what energy that guy had. I wish I had half his energy.

I pray for the family at this time and hope for a fast recovery for Jerri.

I can't believe it either. Tony was a good man who cared about people, especially the kids he taught. The void he leaves behind is enormous.
I will miss him.

Christin, thanks for stopping by to post about Tony! For those of you who are too new to remember, "Jack" (aka John S Farrington) was another prolific member here who had a tremendous impact of many forum members. His screen name here was "John S Farrington" (You can search the User database here and see some of Jack's posts). Jack was a member here from 2002 until his death in 2006. He was one of the guys that, like Tony, was always there to help any way he could. I had the pleasure of meeting Jack a few years ago when I was in Huntsville on business.

Thanks again, Christin. And thanks for sharing your Dad with us for those few years.

Speaking of the kids he taught - You can read some comments from some of his students [HERE]

Hello everyone,

Well, it has been quite a long time since I have participated on British Car Forums, and I am sad to say that I am posting here because of the terrible news. LTC Barnhill was a kind man that always took the time to redirect the "newbies" (me) to success on their LBCs. Yet, for me, not only did Tony give me great advice on my Sprite, he also gave me personal advice on beginning a career in the US Army. Of course, there are many factors that go into a decision like joining the Army, however, Tony's words and experiences that he expressed to me via PM on British Car Forum certainly influenced my decision to join. I enlisted (even though I have a B.A.) did my time as an Noncommissioned Officer and then recently made the jump to become a Warrant Officer in the US Army. I like to think that Tony provided me with some sorely needed external advice on that decision.

I am in utter shock and dismay that such a good man has moved on. I know that he is in a better place right now, and I will pray for him, for his wife's recovery and for the well-being of his family.

in peace,
Joel
