I put my son into my '87 Jeep Cherokee when it came time for him to drive. They may not be "rated" as one of the safer cars, but I can tell you from experiance that they are one tough rig. That Jeep was in two accidents that sent the other cars away on the back of a wrecker while it drove away, and was pulled out of a big ditch and driven away. It never needed more that minor body work after the accidents and no one was hurt. They made a ton of them and all the parts are readily available in the wreching yards cheap.

If I may also make a plea here. I think all children should be taught to drive a stick. It will make them better drivers down the road, and you never know when thay may need to drive one in an emergency even if they don't own one.
 
You look around, you might just find a MK2 Jag within your price point.

I speak from experience.

If you do buy a Jeep, and get the 4.0L in-line six, make certain the exhaust pipe braket is intact, or you WILL break the exhaust manifold.
 
It's hard to beat an older Land Cruiser. The darn things are tanks. My friends like to start the kids in them figuring that
they are likely to survive that first boo boo.
One friend has had two different kids total a Cruiser. Neither accident was their fault. No injuries as opposed to the
other car passengers.
Heck I hit a deer at 60+mph head on and all it did was bent my bumper. The Land Cruiser community is much like the LBC crowd. Very helpful. Lots of resources to tap.
FZJ80s can be had pretty cheap and are still a luxo ride.
FJ60s(82-92 or so)are down right cheap for what you are getting.
Plus the FJ60s are 4 speeds. Still a big old hunking wagon.
Just notice how many LCs you see Special Forces using
when "in country".
Solid axles and factory lockers make these Soccer Mom
grocery getters quite the 6000 lb goats.
FJ40s are expensive now days. Cult following.
They ALL love gasoline however.
The Land Cruisers aren't being recalled either.

Since you were thinking of the X1/9 how about a TR7 instead. Neither are very desirable, both are wedges, and the TR7 is a little larger and probably more reliable with more support for parts. And it is british :square:

I can't tell you how many times recently I've been tempted to get another FJ40. In some ways it was the most fun vehicle I've ever owned. 13 mpg, poor heat, noisy, and not particularly waterproof (oh, and rusting heavily), but so much fun!

I would love a TR7 or 8. They are on my list of things to do.. :smile:
 
Have you seen the prices on used Land Cruisers?
I was tempted by a really nice '76.If I remember,they
were asking $7800 for it,which is cheap.
Someone in our neighborhood bought it.
