I never had. I think engine paint has better adhesive properties, but less ability to flow smooth. But... I do not have a show car either.

I've never primered one - just cleaned it up & painted...now, the question is: when was it painted? After assembly? Or before?

The engine was sprayed by the drunk brit at the end of the assembly line.
A couple o pints and a fag or two before work
A couple o pints and a fag or two at coffee break
A couple o pints some jellied eel and a fag or two for lunch
A couple o pints and a fag or two for tea
And then to the pub again on the way home.
Standard British work day and the reason these cars were always so great and well built.

Ich auch! I pint every part Ford Blue before assembly....then, I paint the assembled engine the correct MG color after assembly

I am not sure. I am just not sure...about anything anymore. Could be both?
Geoff Healey once told me the reason none of the cars paint matched other cars of the so-called same colour was the guy spraying the cars would not wash the leftover paint from the cup before adding the next colour for the next car.
Got a little old english white left what the heck pour in some BRG and start spraying.
To answer the original question, the engines were painted after assembly...by the drunk guy.

A nice place to visit, though there's not much there.
It was one of the very few places in 1999 where the sun could be seen not to shine during the eclipse. Very impressive to sit on the cliffs above the town and watch the moon's shadow come racing in across the sea. Most impressive, even my daughter forgave me for draging her to the middle of nowhere to see it.
