Tinster - Shipping to PR

tony barnhill

Great Pumpkin - R.I.P
Offline
Dale - you've got a PM...by the way, the shipping was only $8.95.

Great news Tony-

That's sure better than $45 for shipping of
2 oil filter elements and 2 carb gaskets.

And HEY!!!!!!!!!!!

See my PM to you.

Are you a "not-for-profit" company or is there an
invoice I have not yet seen??

Or better yet---early Christmas gift??

thanks

d

Aloha Tinster,

I expect Tony used a US Postal Service Flat rate box. Since I live in Hawaii shipping LBC parts can exceed the value of the parts in some cases. Most companies like to use UPS or FedEx because of the tracking and delivery confirmation, but some will use the mail if you ask. Sometimes I have to work hard to convince them that Hawaii is part of the United States and not a foreign country and I suppose that has happened to you regarding Puerto Rico.

Dave-

It happens all the time and makes me crazy. Sometimes
I am charged 150% of the auto part cost for "special
foreign county" rates.............

and then the piece(s) arrive shipped by the United States
Post Office for a few dollars actual cost to the vendor.

Tony is an honest seller and will get all my future TR
parts orders.

I've got 82*F today, what have you got?

Is Tony selling TR parts now? What a great bloke: I bought several pieces from him for my MGB, and I wish he was as active in this forum as he is over on the MG forum. Gave me lots of help.

Aloha Dale,

It is currently about 81*F but will probably cool a little as we are expecting rain. Aren't winters difficult?

I have a local car club member who is a Moss Motors dealer, so I can generally order through him at catalog price and he will cover the shipping. It only works if you're not in a hurry. He collects several small orders and then places a large order.

Although both UPS and FedEx due offer "ground" shipping to Hawaii it is near impossible to people to use it.

Tony is a nice guy and also a source for good used parts, however I think mostly MG parts. Lucas parts are sort of generic. I had a chance to meet him in Hawaii a few years ago.

Have a nice day.

Tony is a Moss dealer, thus can sell any parts Moss offers. That means he can cover most all of our favorite LBCs.
Now for those NLA from MOSS parts, I think he's about 99% MG seeing as that's mainly what his collection is.

Another example of vendor greed:

just tried to order a few 11/16" chrome bolt caps.
Cost $7.50 for the set of 10.

They wanted $25. special handling for foreign
country- United States Postal Service Priority mail.
No other less expensive options available.

Ya think there's any profiteering involved here?
Tony just sent me a whole bunch of stuff for like $9.00
Priority mail box.

They did NOT get my order or any future orders.

Robbers and thieves!!

Dale, perhaps you can politely explain to the vendor how the United States Postal Service works, including its provision of Zip Codes for Puerto Rico...and postal service to same. The USPS web site has all sorts of postage calculators. I tried using my upstate NY zip code as origin for a 2 lb. package sent to zip codes 90210 (CA) and 00921 (PR). Prices are exactly the same for Express, Priority Flat Rate, Parcel Post and Media Mail...and it's actually $.50 LESS to ship Priority Mail (without the Flat Rate box) to PR!

Or, as you -- perhaps wisely -- did, simply ignore said vendor in the future. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I wonder if the USPS would ship <u>ME </u> Priority Mail to PR and back so I could check out Amos in person. The wife would never know I had gone.

Oh yes she would!! The last time I sent Dale some bolts via Priority Mail, it took over seven days to get to him.

I'm sure that she'd miss you after five....

As an aside, an item I'm watching on eBay is currently listed in 12 different auctions. Eleven of the "auctions" are just stores using Buy It Now only. The lowest Buy It Now price is $9.99, plus $19.95 shipping (USPS Priority). The other Buy It Now shipping prices are from $15.95 to $29.95, all with Buy It Now prices over $10.00. All eleven of those sellers have histories of well over 5000 transactions.

The one single "real" auction for the item has a starting bid price of 99¢, with shipping calculated by USPS to my zipcode in Connecticut at $2.95. That single seller has a history of under 100 transactions.

I found the item for sale locally. Retail price is $9.95; items weighs less than one pound.

Totally agree with Dale. There's a whole lotta "shipping" profiteering going on - and it's not just to Puerto Rico.

Tom

Let's see here:

Vendor No1 wants $25 to ship 10 chrome, 11/16" nuts.

Vendor No2 wants $42. to ship a 70 pound differential.

Huuuummmmm???????????

Nice dealing with honest folks.

I like the way Ebay now has a way you can mark for e.g. shipping charges. Very few sellers I deal with get more than 3 stars out of five /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/nonono.gif

I have a big problem when ordering parts from the US. When it comes to shipping charges they automatically add 50% or more to the shipping charges just because it is going to Cananda and I know that I can ship it much cheaper on my own.

I work in the international division of a company that sells pins, challenge coins, and police badges. I run into all these issues trying to get my orders shipped. I've found out that UPS and FedEx do indeed offer "ground" shipping to PR and Hawaii. However, the cost on that is almost the same as doing 2nd day air to stateside locations. I think one problem is that companies assume that they have to ship via air since they are over water. I know I needed to convince my shipping department that we could do it.

As far as shipping to Canada, I normally do that via USPS. The only problem we run into then is customs duties, and we just make it clear to the customer that they are responsible for any duties and fees. One of the other issues is that on anything leaving the US via USPS, we have to deliver them to the post office personally; they will not pick up international shipments from our building. This adds to the labor costs, as we have to pay someone both wages and mileage to take them.

That's all well and good, Rich, except Hawaii,Puerto Rico,
V.I. and Guam are all within the USPS system of normal
delivery and pickup. No special handling required. Name,
address, zip code, postage-----it's delivered!

They pick up at my mailbox at my home.

It burns me up to no end to pay exorbitant shipping fees
and then the part is delivered by the USPS with like
$1.70 postage on it, for instance.

I was not aware the P.O. won't pickup international packages. I DO know we can't pickup parcels WITH STAMPS weighing more than 13 oz. (security). Learn something new everyday. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Tinster,
I wonder if it would be to your advantage if you had stuff shipped to someone in "The States" and have them repackage it for you. Heck, you might even be able to have them foward the stuff to you at no extra charge. I'll check on that one myself. I'd like to know that one. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
