Timing Mark Moving Around
On an engine or transmission or something, the "just rebuilt" thing is often times bogus.
Even Autozone often has a liberal definition of "rebuilt". I once went shopping for a rebuilt distributor with them. The first one they brought out had NO advance springs. The second was missing the entire shaft bushing. The third...the shaft moved up and down 1/4". Funniest part...? This was a lifetime guaranteed distributor!?!

Personally, I don't trust anything someone else rebuilt. But thats just me. Even a great mechanic has to ration his time to make money, whereas I'm willing to spend three days pressing a single bearing to get the clearance perfect. I don't have to make money from my work, it's all love of the hobby...!

Once again, 90% of all carb problems are electrical......

Glad that you got this sorted out before you began playing with the carbs. Jeff will make it right. Over the MANY distributors that he's done for this forum and for the people who have gone to him from the write-ups on my website, this is the first problem that I've seen come from his shop. And it could be a defective new spring that he bought in good faith of having no erratic timing issues with old weak ones.
Famous John Twist of University Motors quote!

Love it!

I never play with carbs. Because it's never a carb problem.

The order I diagnose running issues on my cars, generally, is:

-Mechanical - What's the condition of the motor? Are the valve lashes set correctly? Good oil pressure?
-Ignition - What's my timing set at? What's the condition of my spark plugs? Gapped properly? Are the points good? Gapped properly? Is the rotor good? Are the wires good? Is the cap good? Condenser? (they don't go bad often but it's still worth a think!)
-Carburetors - What leads me to believe the car is running rich or lean? SU Carbs are for the most part set it and forget it if they're in good condition, no reason to be mucking with carburetors.

The lesson here is that there can be faulty parts... Jeff is one person you can trust, that's for sure.

While I "generally" agree with the "I don't trust" rebuilds philosophy, Jeff really is one person you CAN count on.
