Time for an MGF

MGF, TF - I'm thinking about either....ust preliminary right now....gotta do homework

I can put you into contact with the owner of the TF Anniversary Edition recently imported into the States. Contact me offlist.

What about getting one in Mexico, then claiming it was totaled, then bringing it to the US in pieces, then registering it as a custom?

Last time I was in Mexico, I visited a dealer & drove a TF...he wouldn't sell to me though as I had no permanent address in-country...so, the place from which I had rented my car said they could buy it for me...they even said they'd pull the drivetrain but they couldn't ship it out of country without the huge deposit...

Rick - I'll get in touch with you...I talked to one guy who had one for sale "as soon as he got it to California from Mexico"...haven't heard back from him

I we do you a good price, can you take ALL the MGFs back with you? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If you do decide to get one, the TFs have conventional suspension rather than hydragas, which should be easier to maintain. And watch out for head gaskets: if you're over, I'd take a spare head and a couple of spare head gaskets back with you, too.

Never liked them, myself: the driving position is plain uncomfortable, the engineering is both done on the cheap and over-complicated, and the styling leaves me cold. A ZT 26o would be good though: you'd even be able to service it cheaper over there than here!

Tony, you might not have to go that far. I saw a couple of LHD MGF's on the road during my last trip to Mexico City. Not sure how they got there or if there is an importer there, but it sure would be simpler to drive one across than to swim home from England in one!

The the MGF and the MGTF were legally exported to Mexico, weren't they?

Yep, there was a dealer in Guadalahara - that's where I took a test drive.

To quote Steeley Dan: "Guadalahara won't do!"

We need to be able to legally buy a new MG here in the States...we've been denied this opportunity too long.

They aren't M.G.s anyway. They are just MGs. Same as any other new car except for the badge they bought.

M.G. is dead! Long live MG! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I've emailed them a couple of times but haven't heard back.

The biggest problem with importing the MGF from Mexico is getting the certificate stating that it meets Federal safety and environmental standards. When I was in Monterrey a couple of years ago, the dealer was perfectly willing to sell the car to me for $32K US dollars. The sales guy said that he'd sold one to a Doctor in San Antonio. But who knows if the doc spent another $30K to bring it into compliance or gamed the system somehow!
Here's a helpful web site for importation info. Would the same rules that apply to importing a car from Mexico also apply to ones imported from Europe???
The MGTF is a great car, by the way. I really enjoyed the test drive, even in Monterrey traffic.
