tie rod replacement

Replacing tie rod ends on tr6,....how do you get the securing nut tight? The whole shaft that the nut threads onto begins to turn. Someone please explain the simple tasks I am missing!

If you need to steady the shaft, I use channel locks. But if you can't move the nut without turning the rod, I would make sure the threads are clean.

There should also be flats cast into the tie rod ends (ball joints), you can use a open ended wrench (or adjustable wrench) to hold it in place while you tighten down the lock nut.

Or are you taking about getting the tapered pin tightened into the steering arm? If so, a plain nut can be used to pull it tight, then replace with the lock nut. Though I often find that pressing it down into the taper can be enough.

:iagree:

As the nut is tightened, the shaft should be pulled down enough to where it holds. Give it a little help with large vise grip.

Thanks...the plain nut trick did the job. Lowered the car and the front tires seem to be tilting in wards at the bottom. The car was purchased over a year ago and has been up on blocks ever since. Is this normal or is it something to do with some other adjustment. I have replaced all front end suspension bushings, coil spring bushes, damper bushes, tie rods with your help, etc. Do Tr6 tires orient out of plumb slightly?

Until you move the car back and forth a bit to settle the suspension, I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't have the specs handy for a TR6, but I believe it should have slight negative camber, i.e. the tops of the tires should lean in to the car a bit. There are shims on the lower mounting brackets to adjust that. But again, until you get the suspension settled down, you can't check it.
