The value of an EGR

Dudly

Jedi Hopeful
Offline
Hello all hope everyone is well. This may come as a stupid question, but here goes.

I am installing used headers on my 79 spit. They were a bargain and cleaned up rather nicely. My question is this:
I snapped the copper tube that connects the intake manifold to the EGR valve that sits atop the exhaust manifold.
Do I really need the EGR? Can I simply not install it on the headers, and cap the site on the intake manifold?

If I do this, there will only be one vac line going between the Stromberg and dizzy. Do I need to make any adjustments?

I welcome any feedback.

Doug

You don't need it, and it may be partially clogged with carbon anyway. What it does is open a valve when the vacuum dictates to suck exhaust into the intake manifold for a second try at burning off in the combustion chamber.
When you take it off and look at the deposits on the wall of the tube, you'll probably feel it was better not to put it back into circulation.
Threaded plugs are available for the intake and nipple caps for the fitting on the carb.

:frown: Some parts of the Country require Emission Inspections. If you are exempt, then do away with it, would be my advice.

It does make for good ballast in your metals recycling bin, should it decide to float away.

Hi neighbor

I took mine off my 77.

A standard pipe plug will take care of the hole.

However it will not come of easily.

As I remember a vise and 18" pipe wrench. Much grunting. Try heat.

Try 'Weasel Pee'.

Do I want to know what Weasel Pee is?
Do I have to get it from a Weasel?
I'd rather not, I'm allergic to rabies.

according to a Yahoo search it is a drink....I guess.

No it's not. The PCV is part of the system that relieves crankcase pressure.
The EGR is an emission control feature.
As to whether you can eliminate it, yes, but you need to relieve crankcase pressure by some other method.

I wouldn't. I've seen it tried and it gets clogged up from oil vapors pretty quick. When it does crankcase pressure builds and oil starts leaking from seals and the pushrod galley.
You don't need much of a vacuum to keep the pressure from building, just enough to keep it headed in the right direction.

Here's Richard Good's (Goodparts) approach to crankcase ventillation for a TR6 using a modern PCV valve.
Now I know that you don't have a vacuum line for a brake booster, but the brake booster (servo) uses the intake manifold for it's vacuum source, so by going from the valve cover to your intake with a modern PCV valve you'd be accomplishing the same thing, right ?
The PCV is marked V172 "made in USA"

FYI I will be making Weasel Pee this weekend.

Header installed, exhaust system in place. (check)
Install intake system and clean up today. (check)
Test drive to in-laws lake house Sat AM. (check)
Mix vat of Weasel Pee, consume, repeat. (check)

Thanks guys for your help both with the EGR issue, and the mixology lesson.

Cheers!

Dudley,

In case you do have not found out yet, the Weasel Pee referenced is a 50/50 mix of acetone and Automatic Transmission Fluid. Supposedly tested and found superior to all the other commercially available penetrants (eg. PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench)

Nail varnish remover is mostly acetone so that might do at a pinch, I suppose. I have not made my batch yet but I would think it is flammable.

I eventually got the EGR valve off my MG Midget by clamping on (made in USA) Vice Grips and then using a 3 foot length of black iron pipe to use as leverage on the Vice Grips. (with the Vice Grip handle in the pipe)

I would give it a long soak in penetrant first though!

Good luck!

Cheers

I will mix a batch of each.
Sounds like I better not mix up the two, I sort of enjoy life.

Update: EGR in the dust bin, 1/2in plug in place, header powder coated and installed, a bit of grinding and all came together very well. First couple of test runs and I am very pleased, it finally sounds like I've always wanted. It was worth the sweat and hassle, even the crap I got in my eye. (No I wasn't wearing goggles, I know I should know better). Weasel pee lives up to expectations.
Thanks guys once again for the help. Three years of life with my first LBC and I am sure I would have thrown in the towel if it were not for all of you that kept me going, well you all and Team Triumph that is.

Thanks
