Thanks all for the moral support and especially to tdskip, the car is all I had hoped for and more! I haven't seen a Spitfire this clean/original in PA in years. Keys arrive FedEx tomorrow AM, still need to sort the title out.

The doors are frozen shut at the moment, so I can't get inside to take photos :-( Maybe tomorrow.

And there was much rejoicing!

Scott, that honey looks sweet! Rare hardtop too!!

Good luck and keep us posted.

Scott, glad to see you finally got the beast at last. Now, for some suitable weather!

Allan, it snows in PA. (That white stuff that falls from the sky and piles up.) The antenna is actually a marker so the FD can find the hydrant in the snowdrifts.
The straps are anti vandalism / theft devices to prevent unauthorized opening of the hydrant.

Thanks; I have a laundry tub in the garage; I used the hot water tap on the garden hose; so it wasnt too bad.

The driveway kept freezing though, so I was sliding all over the place.

Yes, the antenna helps locate the hydrant (we often get plow drifts that bury the whole thing. Since the hydrant is on an easement on my property, it is my responsibility to dig it out every time it snows, no big deal. The cap is an aint-tampering device of some sort. Although it looks like a bolt cutter would make do if I had to get it off in a hurry /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

So who parks outside? The Bimmer or the SUV???

Re: The eagle has landed! eBay Spitfire is here

Allan, that fire hydrant is actually a cover for the entrance to Maxwell Smarts secret hiding place in PA.

Congratulations Scott,
She looks a beauty. I bet that frost and salt was a shock for it, though! Make sure you have plenty of antifreeze in the radiator!

Great looking spitfire! Definatly the worth trouble.

Great looking car Scott,

I hope nothing "Crypty" happens with it.
Keep us posted with photos.

Tell me about it.

Apparently they don't sell antifreeze in San Diego. It was frozen solid when it arrived. Rad, hoses, overflow tank, water pump, everything - not even slush, a veritable rock.

In fact, it looks like DAS might have cut the water pump belt off to get it started. I noticed the ignition light wouldn't go off no matter the RPM. Checked the obvious and discovered no belt on the alt/crank/waterpump ?!?

I spent Saturday afternoon with my heat gun thawing it out enought to inject antifreeze (no easy task when it's 10F and frozen) and replacing belts. Hoses on order. Looks like it is holding coolant, so nothing cracked. I'm going to have the (tiny) rad hot tanked and pressure tested for good measure while it's apart. And glassbead/paint the fan and rad surrounds. And clean the fan brushes. And... does it ever end?

It sounds good, no engine knocks and the crank endfloat doesn't look bad, so the thrust washers are probably not in the pan.

I'm in Boston until Wed, so I can't play for a while. :-(

I figured as much; I remember you told me the water pump was new, but the belts looked worn. I ordered new ones the day I paid for it.

I'm amazed that it starts immediately. First crank and it's running.

Wow, it sounds like you have been very lucky with the frozen coolant. It is probably worth checking that the core plugs haven't been pushed out a little by the freezing water.
I remember buying my TR3 from Texas and asking the dealer to put anti-freeze in it so that it didn't freeze while it was on the container ship crossing the Atlantic.
