Is there a "Team BCF"?

Starting the middle of September, I'm going to make my long-delayed retirement trip across the USA. Departure from Connecticut on September 16, heading west to Washington, then down the west coast, then heading east and back home by October 18.

I chose the route so I could visit family, students, and colleagues from the last 40 years. No state intentionally omitted; just happens that this route is where those people are. I'll be visiting the "missing" states on future trips. (how's that for positive thinking!)

The car I'm driving is my ol' Mercedes-Benz (see blog below).

I'd greatly appreciate a PM from BCF members along the route, who I might call in an emergency. I won't be needing a place to stay, but in case of mechanical failure, I'd call you for recommendations on finding an "old car mechanic" in the area. Shops that understand things like carburetors, points, non-power drum brakes, etc. The Classic Mercedes club is also involved, but the active members nearly all live in the mid-Atlantic states, or in California.

Anyone willing to PM me with a phone number to be used in mechanical breakdown? A contact in every state along the way? A "Team BCF" who's there "just in case"?

Thanks.
Tom

Good deal, Tom! I'm already on the list for Middle or East Tennessee, depending on when you come through.

message sent. Sounds like a trip of a lifetime!!

Tom,

If you make it down anywhere near Houston and find your ride in need of assistance, give me a call. And above all else, Enjoy the ride! pm sent.

Al B.

Thanks for all the messages!

Looks like so far we've got BCF team in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ontario, Utah, New Mexico, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington, and east Texas.

Last night I took my first night time drive in the ol' Mercedes. Ran like a champ! (knock wood)

Thanks.
Tom

Well Tom, I see your not going through Eastern Oklahoma, but, if you decide to do so, I'm going to PM you my address and phone number just in case. The frige and freezer is full and a soft bed is available. Good luck on with the old girl! They have a great reputation for durability. PJ

Tom,
You're (wisely) avoiding east/west travel in northern New England but I still want to support you so I'll PM you my number on the off chance I can be of assistance.

Tom I'm too far off your route to be of any assistance, but if you ever pass through OK you'd be welcome at my place.

We need to se up a bog HERE on BCF for you to share the hundreds of pictures you're going to take on your trip. Maybe even some digital movies along that way!

Basil - great idea.

Somebody point me to the details of making good photos and videos of the trip. I assume there's something more to it than just holding the camera out the window. Do we already have a topic on that here? Maybe a few examples of well-documented trips?

Tom

We have a Photo Group here you can join and probably get all kinds of tips and pointers.

A trip like that would justify the purchase of s GoPro3. :encouragement:

You got a Chicago connection right here!! Be very glad to provide any assistance I can. Know several shops in the area. Can tell you some great places to eat, etc. And if you're here when the weather is decent, I'll take you out sailing. The view of the city from the lake is amazing!!

Wow - really appreciate the ideas and offers! PMs are on the way.

Also joining the Photo group.

Those gopro3 cameras looks great. But I have yet to meet anyone who actually watches a driving video more than ten minutes long - and it's always on a relatively small display screen. So ... what's the advantage over 15 minute (or less) videos from my Canon PowerShot?

Thanks.
Tom
