Ok keep in mind I am not in any way good with wiring or really fully understand everything.

When wiring in the taillights it doesn't matter which side the wires go into except the ground. But looking at the plate with the light the two wires from the car can go on either side of the bottom correct. One on each side though.

Yes, it does make a difference. The bulbs are dual filament, one for tail and one for brake. The thicker filament is for the brake.
Insert the bulb (like a #1157), it can only go in one way and lock it in. Turn on the tail lights (outer knob on the ignition switch, one click), then touch one of the wires to one of the lamp connections. Then touch it to the other lamp connection. Then connect the wire to the one that is less bright....that is for the taillights. Connect the other wire to the other connection...that is for the brake lights. Make sure you have a good ground, or nothing works with these lamp sockets.

When assembling the electrical circuits I use a inline fuse holder that you can get at any parts store with a 10 or 15 amp fuse in it. Put one end of it under the nut on your battery clamp and use a hose clamp to clamp the other end to your battery post. You then have the whole system fused in case you accidentally short something out. Saves letting the smoke out of some expensive components and wiring.
