Moss now offers a rear disc brake kit for Spridgets!

Tony!!!!!!!

Now that's a real upgrade.

That's pretty goldarn sweet. But as the kit cost more than my car, I'm gonna have to saaaaaay... nope.

Moss says that is a Frontline kit. Frontline sells it for 453 pounds, and that converts to approx $720 US. Shipping from the UK can't be $800 plus!

Also, Winners Circle sells a rear disk brake conversion for about $700 the last time I asked them.

I too have to say NO to Moss! Buy from Frontline or Winner's Circle and get two for the price of one!

Nice eye candy through the mini lites, but do we really need these? Do we need more rear braking power so that it can lock up and put us in a spin? Are we getting excessive brake fade on the rear? Maybe if you're racing Vintage or SCCA, but for the street, just eye candy and expensive candy at that.

Eye candy? Yes, for the street. But I feel the same way about disks on the front of a street Bugeye, especially if well maintained.

The thing I like about disks all around on a street car is they are much easier to maintain. No more wondering if the right shoe is in the right place and right side up, messing with springs (top or bottom, inside or outside), etc. Less worry about oil contamination of the linings...

So eye candy or not, there are some pluses.

Tim

Don't some of these kits lack provisions for emergency brakes?

Tim a Bugeye with some upgrades should have disc's IMHO.

Moss pricing is also a little steep IMHO again.

For quick road use, I don't think the rear discs are a big need. Heck, my new 2009 Honda Fit has drums in the back, and I could lock the rear drums on the Bugeye already.

I am in the process of switching to front discs on the Tunebug, but that's with a hot street 1275 and a lot of mountain roads to drive. If I had kept the 948, I wouldn't have bothered with the swap.

Drew:

I agree completely, don't expect much more stopping power with the rear update.

I agree with Tim - the ease of maintenance is a real attraction for the rear discs but will probably just deal with the drum brakes.....

I suppose in the end it's all about what you want to do. Rear discs are a cool upgrade regardless of their actual benefit or cost. These little cars aren't about practicality, anyways, but about the enjoyment factor.

Always nice to see that folks are continuing to develop new products for our cars.

Come on guys, it’s for your LBC nothing is to good for it. I love the look and sure hope that Santa brings cash so I can get the kit. My 210 trans, rivergate kit and Fedanza flywheel should all be here by Friday. Early Christmas to myself on Friday. I again have gone beyond reason, nothing wrong with my current setup. But it’s for my LBC, so it must be ok.
Cheers Phil

I'll be doing good if Santa brings me enough to buy new brake shoes... let alone a disk kit. Oh but if I had the money... I think I would just buy and Aston Martin DB6 and be done with it

Sure, disk brakes all 'round. Five speed, overdrive, bigger engine, supercharger, fatter tires, air conditioning, comfy seats. And then you can buy a body kit to make it look like a Miata.

Midgets had drums; that's good enuf fer me.

I've actually researched this quite a bit.

RE: Buying directly from Frontline.
I can't seem to find this particular rear set up (the one featured in Moss) from Frontline on their website. I see the front kit, but not the rear. Perhaps I'm not reading the price codes (where they have an complete list of their products) correctly. If indeed you can buy the same set, then of course buying direct is the way to go. I bought my front shock kit from them--very nice people and the shipping is quick (and not prohibitively expensive). I have a feeling this is a somewhat "exclusive for Moss" product--but not sure. Yes, the question on the Ebrake is a valid one. Finally, I believe this rear kit is just for later Spridgets--non BEs--correct me if I'm wrong. Will that work on BEs? One final word on Frontline--I believe they sell a 10" (!) kit with brembos. Now that is pretty cool.

RE: Winners Circle.
Their kit requires some fab (I think) and recommended shaft replacement (again-I think--I did a bunch of research about 1-2 years ago on their product--but I'm starting to forget the details)...Also, no provision for Ebrake. Primarily used for racing so 1) shafts have already replaced and 2) no requirement for Ebrake on the track.

I saw the kit and thought Wow. Then i saw the price and thought.. WOW! awfully high. So i checked the frontline websight (such as it is) and without doing a proper currency conversion thought it cheaper to get it direct, even with shipping... ..

(https://www.moss-europe.co.uk/shop/viewproducts.aspx?plateindexID=8129) The picture sure LOOKS like there's a provision for the handbrake. See the linkage in the picture on the right? The bigger question for me is will it work with the 3/4" bore combination master cylinder?

I tend to do one MAJOR upgrade a year and that may the the fix for 2009, provided I don't have to give the $$$ to one of my kids for college. We'll see what kind of financial package they give to Andrew......

Those of you who saw me and him at the LotO gathering.... I get to brag. He already had an 800 in the Math part of the SATs. On his retake he gained 200 points overall and now 750 in Critical Reading is his LOWEST score. He got a 790 in the writing section and thus has a total of 2340 out of 2400. Never even had an A- or missed a single day of school. The point is I MAY be able to afford this upgrade in the spring, ... provided the economy picks up a little!

Grats Bill on sons fine scores.

Yep, for street use what came on the car is fine with me as well.
