Su Solid state fuel pump

Hi Bob,
Do you know why my AZX1319 pump has a permanent cap on top with a ball check valve in it? It lets air out only. There is also the bottom vent hole as normal. It appears that it is designed to intentionaly pump air through the pump body. Something to do with clearing the ionized air around the contacts, cooling, or?

If your absolutely positive that the pump is original I'd replace it with a newer type solid state. You could just clean and adjust the contacts inside the old one and keep it for a spare. Thats the reason striking the pump sometimes gets it to work. The points inside are either dirty or corroded and merely need a good cleaning to resume operation.

Yeah, Keoke, I have the two originals in the garage that are permanently asleep.... I plan to still use the hammer trick on them, just not in hopes of bringing them back to life. Brute force torture... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Once all the oxygen is consumed and since the vent in the sealed cap is attached to the vent under the diaphram, how is the oxygen going to get replenished? This is not my theory but if I remember J. Taylor [ who advertises as a US factory Rep ] wrote on article in the Healey Mag some years ago stating just this theory. The later SU pumps have added vents to the cap & under the diaphram, I attach a hose between the two vents to keep foreign material, like dust & dirt from being sucked inside.

Bob, I will buy the dirt bit but the no oxygen thing is a bit too much to swallow.Further, if this was so the older pumps would not have been subjected to premature point failure, and the LUcasites would not have been required to remove the suppression capacitor to service Neg Ground requirements here in the US. That act Set SU's reputation back 20 years.Further, If Mr J Taylors theory had been correct there would have been no requirement for the capacitor in the first place.--Cheers Keoke
 
Keoke - I'll look for his article, I know I made a copy, but since I moved, everything is in a box somewhere. We had over 100 apple boxes of stuff all over the basement floor, now sorting down to 25 without a permanent home or waiting for shelves to be built.

I had a TR8 that had its long since unobtainable in-tank fuel pump replaced by one f those little square qizmos. I can't say I ever had any complaints about it - it just looked a little odd.
