TR4/4A Stub axle - grease or no grease?

Hi all,

I am ready to install the (uprated / Uncle Jack's) stub axle on my TR4A front suspension.

Should I apply a thin coat of grease (or anti-seize) to the taper that goes into the vertical link?

My gut tells me yes - the grease would keep moisture out and prevent resulting rust. But does the thin film of grease affect the friction fit of the taper? In an MG post, Dr. Entropy advised "yes" - https://www.britishcarforum.com/bcf...fore-reinstalling-hub-on-a-MGA&highlight=stub

My thought is that the grease will reduce the friction of the "friction fit" which should bring the two tapers into closer contact with the same amount of torque on the nut. Similar to greasing head bolts or studs. I'd grease it. You could also use a bit of oil rather than grease to minimize any hydraulic resistance.

Usually on taper fits light oil is best. I wouldn't recommend antiseize, it can make the tapers too tight. I've seen tapered bushings split when installed with antiseize.

Thanks all. I will use a light coat of oil. Thinking the 90 weight oil for the trunnions - it is handy!
