Strange Comm # plate

While working behind the dash area today, a small
piece of metal fell out. It has commission # cc28932L
stamped on it. A shaped 2" by 2" thin gage aluminum
tab with one ragged edge.

I have several obvious modern replacement plates that
all vary in Comm #. My engine block # is cc 4195 E
which makes it a TR250.

This tab I found today matches the comm # on a black
replacement tag located near the door latch by my left
elbow.

Anyone have any idea what this metal tag I found might be?
or where it used to reside? I feels kinda old to me and has
a patina pattern like aged aluminum. The ragged edge appears
to be a metal fatigue break.

thanks

D

That is mounted on the windshield frame, drivers side. It should be rivited on so the commission number faces out so it can be read thru the windshield. It should match the commission number on either the driver door frame or driver side front fender well in the engine bay depending on the year car. I believe the early cars had them on the fender well and by around 1972 or so they were in the door frame. It may be that it came off during a pst windshield replacement.

Thanks Roofman, appreciated.
In the trunk, there was a very old receipt for
a new windshield. Your theory makes good sense.
It maybe got stuffed behind the dash for "safe keeping"
during the glass installation.

I now have two matching Comm numbers. Cool!!

Quick question -- was it rivited on or screwed on? Mine was in the glove box when I bought Greenie, along with two little screws. Just curious.

My current car ( 72 tr6) has it rivited on, but can't be 100% sure it is stock.

Those little plates were required by US law at about the time the TR6 was marketed over here. All "modern" cars have their VIN number visible on the dash area so that the fella with the big black flashlight can easily read it and run the numbers. I keep mine in the cubby so I can one day reproduce it and put it back. One day.

mine is stranger than yours! My TR6 plate is in the door pillar and is dated 1964!!!!
In Oz they were always in the engine bay over the passenger wheel well (I can see where mine used to be).

Bill:

Could you help me out? Does your 250 have the windshield comm plate as well as the one on the wheel arch? The reason I ask is my 250 has a comm tag on the windshield frame also that doesn't match the orig one on the arch. I am almost positive the PO swapped out the windshield frame from a 6. If there was supposed to be one on the windshield, I may order a new one with a matching # stamp.

AFAIK, the extra tag on the windshield frame started with "Federal" 1969 models, so your TR250 most likely does have a later frame.

Funny thing about these tags, though: a friend and I once came across a 1970 GT6+, wrecked, in a junkyard in CT. Got a good deal, brought it home and parted it out. I discovered that the commission number plate and the windshield number tag *ALMOST* matched; all the digits were the same, but two numbers were transposed on (presumably) the windshield tag!

See the first entry under Collecting Triumph GT6s and Spitfires.

Craig,

yeah I also can see the hole where my original was
located.

1964, huh?? Maybe your PO was dumber than mine!!

My TR250 ('68) has both the windscreen tag and matching wheel arch plate. Have the Heritage certificate that confirms this is the correct VIN for the car.

Hope that helps.

Gary --

My situation is the same as Rob's. The number on the little black aluminum plate that goes on the windshield is the same as the comm. number on the plate found on the wheel arch. My understanding is that these appeared in 1968 for the first time. However, I have a very late 250 -- built in late September 1968 (his birthday is coming up!) and very close to the end of production. It's possible that the tags on the window frame were there from the start of 250 production, or perhaps it came up late in the year. Perhaps this joins the ranks of the tail lamp mystery -- were they all red or red and amber. From what I can tell, they became red/amber somewhere between CD5xxx and CD7xxx, based on a very small sample of four or five original owners and folks like me who know the history of their car and that it still carries the original tail lamps. Some additional research is needed!

Rob, if you're willing to post it, what's the comm. number of your car? If it's early, then we'll shed some light on the window tags. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I got all new comm. plates in from TRF and installed a new one on the inner wheel well as well as the B pillar (the holes were already there but never had a comm. plate. go figure.) The fun part was stamping the proper letters and numbers in. I borrowed a stamping kit from a friend and practiced on scrap aluminum for.....ever. I finally rigged up a little jig to align the individual dies until I got it perfect. Soooo easy to screw up. Twas fun.
