This is the picture of my carbs that I sold. You can see the vertical tube for the choke cable and the angled tubes for the Y-pipe.
 
OK I see them, I checked with the previous owner, he never swapped out carbs, he was third owner. So somewhere between 1970 and 1988 the carbs were mis matched and set to run with only one vacuum to the oil seperator. The previous owner said he had taken the car to an MG guy who tuned the carbs, so I guess it is possible........
