steering wheel removal

Before I break this thing: How is this center-piece removed? Are you supposed to pry up? Turn and pry? Do you remove the whole thing as one or just the MG medallion first?
My goal is to remove the wheel from the column.

Normally you push it inward and turn it counter-clockwise and it should come off.
What year is your car since that wheel is from a '72 or so.

It's a '70 and it's out of the car which is making it laughably difficult. It looks like there's a wire/spring in there that's held by clips. Is that about right?
 
I THINK the center emblem can pop out AND the outer soft section also can be pried off.
