Steering wheel question

Too be honest guys, it has already been badly chewed up by previous owners. I wonder if the reason for all these stuck and messed up screw rings is the fact that most people dont know they are reverse thread.
 
DerekJ!! They are NOT reverse [left hand] thread! THEY ARE RIGHT HAND THREAD, STANDARD! IT IS YOUR VIEWPOINT THAT IS REVERSED. Sit in the drivers seat, reach forward and turn the collar [nut or boss] CLOCKWISE! Use a strap wrench! On the extremely reluctant I have wrapped the collar w/leather then used a chain wrench. Apply plenty of penetrant from both ends and and allow it time to work it's magic before proceeding. Rapping lightly to vibrate the lower section of the collar may help the penetrant penetrate. TRY A STRAP WRENCH FIRST. CLOCKWISE to remove when viewed from your normal sitting position in the driver's seat.

I hate to chime in so late, but I returned my Moto Lita wheel and bought a Lempert wheel. The Moto Lita was of inferior quality. You could see the layers of wood that make up the body. the lempert wheel is solid pieces and look much nicer. Takes a while to get them as I think he makes them to order.
 
Legal Bill, I disagree that the Moto Lita wheel is inferior quality due to the exposed layers. That style of laminate wheel with exposed rivets was all the rage back in the fifties and sixties. I think most period steering wheels were built the same way. Now if you like a solid wood wheel, that's great, but it doesn't mean the quality of other styles is inferior.
 
I have never seen your Motolita wheel, perhaps it was of inferior quality, but Rob is telling you the truth here. I am glad that my wheel cannot read.
 
My Moto Lita is signed on the back side while others I've seen are signed on the front. What gives with that? I think the quality is just fine. That's why they make different flavor ice cream.

Well I went to where my car is garaged - about 45 kms from home - to install my new Moto - Lita wheel and Moto-Lita horn push.

The car is stored in a large barn where the owner works on his cars and has tools all over the place. You'll never guess what the first tool I saw was - yes a pipe wrench. It was an omen so I got to work with it and loosened the adjusting screw (CLOCKWISE) without any more damage to what is already a damaged screw ring. So far so good. Next were the set screws - all three were diferent and the only one that was a real set screw was stuck fast. Finally got it our after using lots of penetrating oil and a metric allen key on what had become a slightly larger 'hole'. Going good.

Next I began dismantling the trafficator as I am not replacing it and I wanted to disconnect the wires at the wheel end to use with the Moto Lita horn push Still going good.

Then I got to the remaining part attached to the stator tube, which seems impossible to enter as there are no visible screws or clips and worse I had forgetten the article on the Acmefluid website. Bottom line I wasted the rest of the afternoon tearing my hair out try trying to figure out a way in and cursing the lunatic who designed it - then gave up before I was tempted to destroy the whole thing!!

Just read the article and now I see how it comes apart, simple - darn!

Anyway I'm off back there tomorrow to finish the job BUT I have a wiring question. My car already has its indicators wired to a switch on the dashboard. When I have dismantled the trafficator there will be four wires there, I've seen them. The indicator wires may not be connected at the steering box end,as they are not being used - hopefully I will have access to a lift and be able to verify the exact situation.

Question - how do I attach the two horn wires. There only seems to be one connecting point on the Moto-Lita boss and horn push. Has anyone installed the Moto lita centre horn and can help me out here as I dont want to do something silly and short circuit the whole thing.?

Help needed quickly before I set off tomorrow.

There are three trafficator wires and one horn wire. The one for the horn is suppose to be brown with a black stripe. Power is always supplied to the horns and pushing the horn push completes the circuit by grounding the earth side of the horns.

I hope that's clear.
 
And if you have the trafficator out, the horn wont work until the trafficator is reassembled to the top stator tube and re inserted into the stator. Did mine yesterday and tried testing it before re assembly. It confused me until I acidentaly earthed it whilst pushing the horn button. The acmefluid article by Lin Rose is fantastic, I now have a centred wheel and trafficators which self cancel. now searching for a piece of wood to touch.

Very well spotted, considering you were supposed to be looking at the photo of the steering wheel!!

I have only erected the top once. That was to drive the car from the UK to Belgium. I guess it didn't register with me at the time but it does seem that Im missing the top wood bar! Must add that to he to do list.
