TR2/3/3A Steering Wheel hitting my belly

Guys, I'm not done, but still have no solution. I'm very hesitant to remove the stator until I can prove that the stator is broken and everything I've done tells me that the tube is in one piece. It all moveds together, both the top and the bottom. That makes me think the tube is one piece and not broken. The amount of the tube sticks out past the locking nut is short, by the amount that is sticking out the top. In the pictures of the stators I've seen show some kind of an alighment slits in tube about 1/3 of the up the tube. I'm wondering if that is getting hung up going through the column?? I'll keep looking.
Mean time I'm headed out to Put-In-Bay island for their Vintage Races this week. Will be back to to working on the TR in two weeks.
Everyone have a great weekend and thanks for all your help.

Looking closely at your picture with the trafficator pulled out:

You are not seeing the top o f the stator. You are looking at the larger tube connected to the trafficator, which is about 10" long. If the trafficator will not pull out farther, you will have to lock the olive at the steering gear, align the wires to pull into the stator at the bottom, and pull hard on the trafficator until the tubes separate. What has happened is the trafficator was jammed onto the stator with the slots mis-aligned. The dimples that were supposed to fit into the slots now wedge the tubes together.

If you cannot separate the tubes using the above method, then remove the olive, unplug the wires and align them to go into the hole, and pull the entire trafficator/stator assembly up and out of the steering column. You will then be able to work on it on your bench.

CJD, thank you, your explaination makes sense of everything I see and agrees with what everyone on the thread has been trying to tell me. When I get home from our current trip I have a plan of attack on this also I need to remove the radiator and resolder around the filler tube connection, so the front apron needs to come off. This will allow access to the radiator and wiring connections to the trafficator.
Thanks for the help.
