Steering Wheel Compatibility

Spridgets used 4 different steering shaft splines over the years.
58-64
65-67
68-70
71 on
And they are NOT interchangable.

Well, I will have to say that a '68 Sprite steering wheel will fit on a '59 BE. I say this from personal experience last year. I swapped the two and am driving the BE with the later model steering wheel.

I had a '69 with a banjo steering wheel. The horn push was on the turn signal lever. And that wheel doesn't fit my RWA car which bums me out a little. I just scrapped that '69 and tried to save the steering column but it didn't happen. But I did save the banjo wheel and center...

Craig,

Can you post a pic of the wheel. I've got a '68 and might be interested.

I have a later model steering wheel (banjo type) and shaft (I do not know what year it is out of), complete with column-mounted ign. switch but without the center boss (horn push?)I can post pix if anyone is interested in it!

Mike,

If it came out of a '69 I might be interested. Bugsy is currenly equipped with what I believe is a TR-4 Wheel. 3 Spokes x 3 or 4 wires and I have a Sprite Center Horn Push which looks great but is non functional on a '68. Please post a pic

Good Morning,

Will a standard steering wheel from 1968 fit on a 1966? What are the differences between the 2 steering wheels if any?

Thanks,

s

No. The steering columns are different. So a 1968 wheel will not fit on 1967. The 1968 is the pillow dash so the steering wheel does not have the horn in the center..it's on the turn signal mechanism. The 64-67 has the horn in the center of the steering wheel.

When I converted my 1969 MG midget to the steel dash I had to replace the steering column and steering wheel. I used a 1966 Midget column. So when I bought a 1969 banjo style wheel from Moss to replace the grant steering wheel i had on the midget it did not fit as the steering column hole was bigger than the whole on the 68-69 banjo wheel.

So if you want I have a brand new Moss Replica Banjo steering wheel that I never returned to Moss. I paid about $180 with shipping.

You can have the Steering wheel for $150 and free shipping.

Jim, as I said, I do not know what it is out of (I acquired it with a bunch of other donor parts for my BE), but here is a pic that may help in identifying it. If it is what you are looking for, PM me and we can go from there!!

The wheel I have was out of a car with side reflectors (not lights) and the horn on the turn signal...in fact I have two of those wheels which came off of side reflector cars.

Mike, What you have is a stock wheel out of a '68 or '69. I've got one of those attached to a spare steering column I pulled out of a '68 Sprite that I grabbed some parts off of.

Steve, Got some pics of the "Banjo Style" MOSS Wheel. Does it come with the adapter hub to fit a '68 / 69 column. Inclidentally I'm told a '68 and '69 wheel also fit a BE's column. You may have a bigger market for that wheel than you think.

This is the wheel that came out of a side-reflector car...late '68 or an early '69 Sprite I think.

No, I can't explain the blob of epoxy in the hub - the hub's not cracked. The bakelite rim isn't cracked either. Note the lack of any provision for a horn push...the Sprite hub is cosmetic only. The horn push was on the turn signal lever.

Craig,

The wheel looks nice. How much do you want for it? My TR-4 Wheel is cracked in spots and slightly bent in others. But I do like the 3 x 4 spoke arrangement.

Well, that looks like the identical wheel to the one I posted except that mine seems to have a stitched leather "wrap" on it. Thanks for the ID...at least I know it is for a '68/'69!!
