Steering Rack Oil

My TF has a fitting on the rack where I can fill it with a gun. The wifes B doesn't have that fitting and as I remember it was a mess putting oil in it. Anyone discover a non messy way of filling one of these on a B? PJ

No response.

Re: Deleted

Unscrew the fitting and pump the oil in? Make a dedicated oil-gun... OR use JD Cornhead grease. I've followed that discussion for a couple of years. Started using it myself this summer. Neat stuff.

Re: Deleted

Sorry no one got back to you sooner, but I've been looking for info I had when I was searching this a while back.

Didn't find it, but what I remember was the use of some sort of injector; loosening the boots at the ends of the rack and pumping the oil in.

Re: Deleted

There is no fitting! One on my TF, but none on the B. PJ

Re: Deleted

Unscrew the two bolts holding the plate with the spring/tensioner under it (be aware there could be shims in there) and pour some oil in.

Re: Deleted

Thanks Doc, that's what I wanted to know. Much appreciated. Last time I put oil in it was back in 05 when I restored the car and since then one of the bellows leaked. The old brain has gone numb, amongst other things and I couldn't remember how I did it. PJ
