TR2/3/3A Steering Column Grommet

Hello All,

I've seen a number of ways the steering column grommets have been installed, sometimes trimmed. The clamp onto the column itself is clear. Should there also be a hole in the firewall above the column where the top base of the grommet is screwed in? Also, on my car, there is a band of metal along the side of the firewall protrusion. I have read that the side of the grommet gets bent around the edge and stuffed in there. Is that so, and if so, should it also be attached by a screw on the side? Any available photos would be very much appreciated.

My recollection (TR3 is on the lift at the moment and cannot take a look) --

There is a screw securing the top of the boot to the firewall. You can just get a glimpse of it in this photo:

I did no trimming of the grommet and can see no need for any.

The inboard edge does tuck into that metal strap (there is another vestigial strap on the opposite side for a RHD car). As I recall, no screw was used.

The clamp is the usual wire hose clamp.

I split the grommet on the bottom side to install it w/o undoing the steering column - you have the advantage of doing things in the proper order.
