Steering Box Oil

I'm trying to figure out how much lube to put into the steering box.
Also is it measured in ml? if so, what is a ml equal to?

If you fill it via the bung in the top plate, up to the bung hole is considered full and will adequately lube the rear race.

Or fill it via the hole in the outer casing midway down the steering column. It doesn't matter if the box gets overfilled and there's oil in the bottom of the steering column.

A 500 ml container (0.88 of a pint) of oil more than fills the steering box with overs.

Check that the stator tube nut at the bottom of the steering box is tight, as oil tends to seep out from there. It's hard to avoid minor weepage because the sealing gland is a split design, so it's never perfectly oil tight.

I use a product called Penrite Steering Lube, which is a slumping grease that stays put, rather than an oil which can seep out. Some don't think it's ideal, but I can only say there's no play in the current TR3A steering box after 15 years of solid use.

I like the Penrite too but the stuff is so thick it can be hard to add thru that plug in the column. I usually top up on a hot day and use a little squeeze bottle with a pointy tip to squirt the Penrite in along the center column -- helps to if the front is raised so I can work the steering wheel side to side to help the goo work it's way down.

Wouldn't want to fill an empty box thru that little plug hole but for topping up it's easier than getting at the fill plug on the box's top cover (have to remove the horn to get at that).

OK great. The box has been completely pulled apart so is dry. This helps alot.
Thanks Again

I'm curious: Do you use STP Oil Treatment straight, i.e. nothing else to fill your steering box, or do you use it as an additive with some other oil? I'm asking because it is actually marketed as an engine oil additive.
