started installing springs today

finally got my front springs back, media blasted and painted. took apart the front end (had been using PVC pipe to hold everything in place) and decided that I really should splurge and spend the $3.00 to install grease nipples on the other side of the fulcrum pin. OK it actually cost $10 cause I had to buy the right sized tap. Why I even debate this sort of cheap insurance is beyond me :wall: but the real reason I'm telling you this is that after I drilled the holes I stuck my magnetic screw retriever into the fulcrum pin socket to see of there was any debris. I was STUNNED by the amount of shavings in there - not from the drill but from the threads. Just the suggestion to check and recheck the cleanliness. :thumbsup:
 
For removal and installation of the front springs...
Do you use the threaded rod procedure?
This is the only way I know how to do it on the Midget but just wondered if there were any other tricks out there for these small springs.
 
I did the threaded rod thing - a lot of others swear that you just kick in the spring and jack up the A-arm with a floor jack till you can bolt up the king pin - takes much less time. My only anxiety is scratching the paint kicking in the springs so I'll likely stick with the threaded rod theory.
 
Your choice of course.
 
did you scratch your paint at all when you kicked in your springs?
 
I don't know about jlaird, but I scratch everything I touch. :crazy:

Do you know what is the spring rate on the stock 1500 springs?
 
Only on the center of the spring pan. Touch up with a small brush. Hard to even see the scratch inside the spring much less the touch up.
 
Importantly, Jack's springs are about 2" shorter than JP's, if everyone is on stock springs. The drop-kick method (ha ha) may work on the earlier cars, but I think the bolt method is better for RB cars.
 
Ah Ha! but it's not an RB car anymore is it?! :nonod: It's a chrome bumper and as such has 1275 springs. :hammer:

I've never installed 1500 springs using the kick method, but i've removed them in a similar fashion.
