Springs and such

Hi Gents:

I've been away for a bit because I broke may hand and haven't been able to work on the Midget at all. I'm nearing the time when the cast is off and want to get some things lined up.

The first thing I want to tackle is fabricating new upper and lower control arms. I'm going to do a tube dampener conversion, but use a traditional spring--basically duplicate The-Mite. So, for the RB, what is the best spring? I obviously want to drop it down to at least Chrome Bumper height, but prefferably, an 3/4" or so below that. Since I'm fabbing my own control arms, will the lowered CB springs match the upper spring perch on the RB chassis?

I don't want to do coilovers.

So before I place a big order for poly bits, I'd like to know what front spring to use. Think fast roadwork / AutoX. Tons of more questions, but I'll hold off for now.

-Thanks, Chris

Chris,

The stock chrome bumper ride height is pretty low... and will be even more so if you've got the slightly heavier 1500 engine. But if you get that, and want to go lower, 1/2" spacers on the spring pan will lower your car about 3/4". Easier to do that than get springs that are too short, and have to try to figure out how to increase ride height!

If you want pictures, I'm about to put stock CB springs on my 1500... but it might be a week or two.

My question would be why reinvent the wheel. Spridgets seem to do pretty well stock as is. Other than coolness is there really a reason to potentially end up with something worse handling / more unsafe than you've got right now? Not something I would undertake lightly unless you've got major engineering background. Think Safety Fast!

Thanks gents! I would like to see the CB springs on the RB. Please forward pics along.

I like to reinvent the wheel! Mostly, i do it out of boredom, which lead me to designing the suspension on my scratch built car--front and rear. The rear even has a rocker system with double adjustable dampeners. Twist a rod one way and the car raises; twist the other way and it lowers.

Does the RB car handle well? I would assume that raising the stock suspension an inch would be bad for handling. I'm looking at these springs. Has anyone tried them?

What are the free lengths of the stock CB and RB springs?

--Thanks, Chris

Thanks for the interest. My old website went down, and I'm in the process of building out the new one. It is typing intensive, though, and the casted hand doesn't help.

When the MG went from the CB car to the RB car, they raised it up an inch, right? How was this done in the rear? Does the RB car use different rear spings or was a spacer (or something) removed?

--Thanks, Chris

I think the springs are the same - I know there were spacers at the front of mine. I removed the spacers and dearched the springs an inch
