TR6 Spray painting a TR6 engine compartment comments

Re: Spray painting a TR6 engine compartment commen

Ray, very, very nice. I hope to one day feel comfortable taking on my 6 the way you have. Great job!

Hey Ray !!

Nice project indeed. I gotta question for ya.

How did you protect all that nice bare metal from
developing rust prior to painting?

Here in the tropics, bare metal gets a patina
of rust overnight. I must primer paint as soon an
area of bare metal is cleaned up.

looking good,

regards,

dale

Re: Spray painting a TR6 engine compartment commen

Dale, thanks, I use a product called Picklex20(phosphoric acid and polymers). The product is a bit pricey, but it does prevent the bare sheet metal from rusting provided you do not get it wet, touch it with sweaty hands, etc. I am not sure how it would work in your environment, but where I live, just a couple of blocks off the Monterey Bay, were we get a lot of morning fog and of course salty ocean breezes, the stuff keeps the rust away even in the not so tight shed I am working in. I actually had metal coated with Picklex20 that did not rust through a wet winter.

There are other products that provide similar protection, but more work. I got some phosphoric acid from the local ACE Hardware store that will off some protection simply by not wiping off the residue, you do of course need to wipe it off prior to painting.

Update

Had to put down sanding primer. Two coats gray, one white, sanding in process, no red yet, not hard, just tedious...

Hopefully Mallard Blue early next week.

Re: Update

No substitute for doing a job correctly and you are definitely doing it correctly.

It will all be worth it when the hood is opened at the first show that you display the car.

Stupid, stupid, stupid me

Why to I make a plan then not follow through with it? Seam seal all seams, that was my plan. But NO, not me, the seams around the fender wells looked good. Most were, but not here.

One day after some wet sanding, RUST appeared. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Well at least the up side is it showed up before the color and clear coat, which will now have to wait a while until this is fixed.

Re: Stupid, stupid, stupid me

We've all been there or have done something like that at least once.
