TR6 Spray painting a TR6 engine compartment comments

OK, getting ready to shoot the engine compartment. This 6 foot 175 pound guy, with a small pot does not have much room to move around in there. Seems if I want to do the whole thing, I will be standing in the middle of a donut with wet paint just waiting for my butt or other parts to smudge it.

Any suggestions on how to proceed or how to do it in sections would be appreciated, like maybe the back and sides together, then the front?

Ray,

Is the engine in or out?

On the first go around on my car, the engine was in and he got about 90% of everything. We just did the hidden areas after it was out.

So to answer your question a 5'10" painter did this work from outside.

Oh, one other thing.

Do yourself a favor and Clear Coat everything.

I did mine with rattle can from the outside. With a gun and keeping back the working distance, you should be able to shoot from the opposite side you are painting.
I know you will want it nice, but again how much will you be able to see with the engine in?
I agree, clear coat it. One thing super shiny is nice but matte is kool too!

Thanks guys. The body is off frame and setting fairly high on stands. In this elevated position, I did not think of cross shooting. So I guess I just need to get the body lower and give her a go. This will be fun, and I will clear coat.

What other project????

Re: Spray painting a TR6 engine compartment commen

When I did mine, it was on saw horses. I crawled into the engine compartment and shot the firewall and the more difficult to reach areas and just worked my way back, standing ahead of what I was shooting. I painted the front valance from outside the car. I entered and exited from the front valance.
Avoid loose or bulky fitting clothing.

Did Her MGB with engine in, as a "panel repair" job. One side at a time, pulled EVERYTHING away from the sides and masked off.Did it in polyurethane with a gravity fed gun. It came out passably well.

"It came out passably well."

I'd say it came out "passably great"!

Re: Spray painting a TR6 engine compartment commen

So Ray......

Are you ever gonna show us the results???

Re: Spray painting a TR6 engine compartment commen

Soon, still doing prep and brush painting areas that cannot be sprayed and cutting in seams and seam sealing. A little more prep, and I should have it primed by Sunday, final seam sealing then top and clear coated by Tuesday.

Unless I get distracted.

Re: Spray painting a TR6 engine compartment commen

Ray - what are you using to seal the seams? I assume you prime those areas first?

Yes, I brushed primed the deeper seams then sealed with 3M Heavy Drip-Chek Sealer. The other seams will be sealed after the epoxy primer coat with the same stuff.

Yeah...........that's what I'm talkin' about!

That's the ticket.....Nice Job!!

Re: Spray painting a TR6 engine compartment commen

Looking at your picture, that must be a "ONE HORSE" engine in there Ray!

Re: Spray painting a TR6 engine compartment commen

Well, just an update, as you can see I am getting closer. Looks like I will need to put down some sand-able primer to smooth things out a bit before the final coat.

By the way, I now hate painting engine compartments.

Re: Spray painting a TR6 engine compartment commen

Ray,

You'll be VERY happy with the results when it's completed. Trust me on that one.
