This drawing of a late chassis with measurements (I thought the picture was kinda large to include here, so just click on the link) shows pretty well where and how they mount. The tabs themselves are pretty much at a 45-degree angle to the chassis, and probably any big old hammer (and maybe some kind of dolly on the other side) would straighten them enough to be serviceable again.
