Spitfire Spitfire 1500 - Front Pulley Nut Removal?

I am working with my son to stop a front of the engine oil leak on his 1500. We are replacing the sealing bar, pan gasket, front plate gasket, timing cover gasket, and front seal. To do this we need to get the crank pulley off.


Our pulley nut won't budge. I have put a wedge between the block and crank and used a huge socket with a lengthy breaker bar on it. It won't move. I'm afraid if I pull any harder the huge breaker bar will break.


I have tried my impact wrench and while it is good, it cannot move this nut either. I may bring home a bigger impact gun from work to see if it is up to the task.


The manual says these things go on with 110 ft-lb. I know we've been pulling with somewhere between 2 and 3 times that. What should we try/do to get that front pulley nut off the crank?


All advice is welcome.

Doug, this has been a problem for a lot of people. You can do this at your own risk. Brace your bar on the frame and hit the stater.

Thanks Wayne. I thought about trying that. It is a method that is also used on A-series engines. In the end I was afraid of what might happen... just like I was afraid of all the torque I was putting on the breaker bar.

In the end I did get the nut off. I sprayed the nut liberally with PB Blaster and hit it again with my impact wrench. However, I alternated between tightening and loosening to shock the joint in both directions. After about 5 minutes of that I noticed the nut slowly starting to move counterclockwise and then all of a sudden it hit the sweet spot and spun off. What a ridiculous amount of torque.
