Spare tire

I'm going on a long distance trip and tryimg to get more room in my trunk. Is there any small spare tire that would fit on the MGB 76?

Thanks

Don

Don, if you're not running wire wheels: turn the spare to the outside down attitude and use the space inside the rim as additional stow space?

I know of no "space saver" tire I'd care to use, but it would pro'lly be VERY little saved space comparatively in any event.

I've cut the original hold-down gizmo and threaded it so it works in the upside-down position. A "local" trip toolkit, scissors jack, shop rags, nytril gloves, a 'windbreaker' jacket and a "lyin' down tarp" all stow in there with ease.

I hadn't seen John's mod before... "Great Minds" an' all that jazz. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

Mid-80's, 900 I think

Yes, up through 1986, 900, bolt pattern is 4x4.5

I've been looking but haven't found one yet. I may just go with John's "upside-down" solution.

I made up a tray that just fits inside the wheel, to store stuff in and keep it contained while I place the spar, right side up over it. The tray has a hole in the center ao the hold down bolt will fit through. Works great, although installing the spare upside down would be a bit easier. Doing this and putting a battery box in the unused battery space (since converting to a single 12 volt battery) provides all the room I need for tools and spares (and a set of chains in the winter months) we can then get everything else we need in the trunk and behind the seats for an annual, three week trip to California to visit our aging mothers. We even take a lap top computer, scanner, CD burner and printer with us so my wife and do any genealogy research she wants to do while we are there.
Cheers,

It is my understanding that a 13" VW Jetta donut spare will work and I plan to try it.

Maybe on a Frogeye, but I thought we were talkin' MGB. <shrugs> /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

You mean they have different sizes, strange that.
