Space Saver Spare Fits!

Thanks to Hawaii Guy over in 6-Pack, I picked up a Space Saver Spare today and everything fits as advertised. I just updated my site with all the specs and pictures but here's a few pictures for the Forum.

Neat, I did a similar thing on my TR4. I am using a Spitfire 13" Wire Wheel as the spare. It fits great on the splined hub and is much easier to place in the trunk.

Thanks for that Bob-

I wonder if that would work in my 3A? Diameter for sure, and as long as the width isn't worse than a 155/165-15 setup it might be a nice solution for the cramped wheel compartment.

Bob - hope it is OK but I grabbed some details from your site;

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:]Basically you want a Space Saver or Compact tire in a 4 bolt by 114 pattern on a 15" rim. These can be found on any 1990 - 1997 Honda Accord Wagon which will then give you a cross reference for other Honda & Acura cars that will work. [/QUOTE]

Good find, thank you. Gonna find one tomorrow.

Hmmmm... Wonder if that'll clear oversize brake calipers...

Mickey, that would be my concern as well; similar concern in using a Spitfire 13" wire wheel as a spare on a TR. I suppose one can put such a spare on the rear and move a good rear tire to the front, but that's twice as much work to get you off the side of a busy road!

It's always good to test these things to make sure, as there can be problems with different original wheels. For example, some of the older 3.5" wheels for Herald and Spitfire will NOT fit the front of a GT6 with its larger Girling 16P calipers.

As I recall. there are space savers that will mount up to a TR3 rim (which would eliminate any concerns about caliper clearance).

Someone (possibly Randall) has done this & I would appreciate any suggestions on what size space saver works.

On my TR8, I have the Rover/Vitesse big brake kit from Rimmer Bros. Have 14" Panasports, and need spacers on the front to clear. Not my choice, but at least with the spacers, the wheels turn!

The spare is the original 13" alloy, and if I have a flat on the front, I'd have to swap a rear over to the front and put the spare on the rear, 'til I can get it repaired/replaced. Would be the same with a Space Saver, I'm sure.

Yup, that was me. What I found was that the junkyard rim would not clear my front calipers (I think the TR3/A calipers may stick out just a bit more than the smaller brakes used on TR4-6), so I had to move the tire to an original TR3 rim.

I'm not absolutely certain of the size offhand, but I think it was a T135/90D15. I can check if need be. Pretty much any D15 tire should fit the TR3 rim, though.

Note that the diameter is somewhat smaller than the original tires (I keep a rolled up blanket stuffed beside it so it doesn't slide around in the spare tire well). This will alter the car's handling, not for the better. So you should follow the standard advice : Temporary use only, do not exceed 45 mph.

That said, the only time I've used it, I drove 70+ mph for over an hour and had no problems. Since my wide rims have no hope of fitting in the spare tire well, the flat rode behind the passenger seat.

If it doesn't fit the front due to the calipers but it does fit the rear OK......you could just move the good rear tire to the front and put the SSS on the rear. A little more work if the front goes flat but it's an option. I just updated my site with some more pictures as I've moved the tire to an offset position in the trunk. This lets me put the tire in upside down which opens up the inside of the rim as a big storage area as well as making more room in the tire pit.

I used 5/16" threaded rod and a wing nut to lock it down

The jack, lug nuts, sockets, gloves etc gets stored in the wheel with a bungee cord.

Lots of room in the tire "pit"

Beautiful work Bob.

But I need to ask you a question, so I sent you a PM

This is all good and all. But that is what AAA is for and Hagerty plus.
Have them change it.

And no bars on my cell phone.

I think I'll continue carrying a spare

I didn't say not to carry it. I said have them change it, RANDALL

I would think so - the front brakes should be very similar to a TR6, and everything else would match up.

So you're suggesting I sit on the side of the road and wait for them to just happen along?

Even when I have cell coverage, I can change a tire and be on my way faster than AAA can get to the scene. But there is a surprising amount of this country where I get no cell coverage ... I'd guesstimate there was no coverage for at least 1000 miles out of the 5000 mile road trip I took last month, even at my sister's home (in rural Indiana). (Oddly enough, I did get coverage at Hoosier Pass though, which surprised me.)

And there are parts of west Texas where you could literally walk for hours down I-10 without finding a working pay phone!

:iagree:
As long as it's not a very early TR4 with the 11" rotors (like TR3/A).

Randall, You must never have nice clothes on then.
