Soo, OK... 'nother question about Moss and Chrome

I will look tomorrow...I've got 2 old MGA parts cars that haven't been molested - just need to look at frames.

Tony,

As I said in my last email

WELCOME BACK... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cheers.gif

Hope you had a great time.... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

Anyway.. Please no rush on the chassis extention... When you get the chance but don't make a special trip over it... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Ron - I have an old MGA coupe parts car that appears to have a good one under it!

Hey ronzet,
I just shared my Moss MGA bumper story (major dissapointment in quality) with the Healey forum. At the same time I ordered the bumper set (1991) I also ordered the grille for my 1957 MGA. I have to say the grille was a great reproduction, unlike the front bumper parts. The fit was perfect and the finish looked as original. If Moss has since improved the product, I would say get it from Moss. If at first look you are not satisfied, I believe they will honor the return. Aside from the rear view mirror repro from Moss, the grille was my second favorite purchase. I still have the mirror in a box, with broken glass and a perfect gold housing. I no longer have the MGA, so if anyone could use the unit, let me know. I believe you can swap the mirror glass easily. If you are beginning a restoration, ronzet, the mirror is yours, just tell me where to ship it to....... I miss the "A", but am always looking for another when the Jaguar is completed.

Best Regards,
Brian

bmurphy7369,

Thanks for the note. I am a bit reluctant to express confidence in the after market chrome parts available today. I bought a few misc. parts for the 100-6 Healey that I am restoring only to find them beginning to pit a year after installation. The car is in a garage and protected from the elements... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif

Thanks for the offer of the mirror... I already have a new one. My A is now running and I am in the midst of detail work to put it on the road, the first time it has done so since 1974... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/driving.gif

Great stable of Jags, by the way.. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

Well, I'm talking with Jim at Knox Custom Chrome about redoing one of the rear split bumpers on Jerri's '70 GT....$100....I've not been able to find a new right side to match the NOS left side so its going out to him in FEDEX today!

Jim at Knox will give you great service and a super product. He can do stuff in regular or show quality for a bigger price. He will also repair what ever needs it first.

No problem Ron, I hate to see the mirror go to waste, so anyone else just email me if they would have a use for the MGA rearview frame.
The stable of Jags is emptied except for the 1975, but I have enjoyed them all. I am glad to see so much talk about replating, as this is probably going to be an issue for the XJ6 coupe soon. Glad to hear that you are on the road....

By the way, Tony and anyone else with this experience... I posted in the Jaguar forum regarding my Crane ignition wiring issues. I have learned that the setup I have (OPUS) is more than likely going to be wired more closely to the MG and Triumph setup with OPUS, since I no longer have the original Jag/Lucas Amplifier with the ballast resistor built in.... It is gone, so I have the typical ceramic ballast res. next to the coil.>

I am having problems understanding the jumper wire setup needed to create the connection to the ballast from the coil (with dual spade NEG and POS from the Crane and the car wiring. Anyone with this experience, please pass on your knowledge. I was finally enjoying some drive time in the Jag when some old and brittle wires jarred out of the original spade terminals and left me with no ignition. There is no identifying their original position, some are replacement wires/extensions which are not color-matched to Jaguar's ignition wiring, and some I am sure were not connected before the mishap. Thanks in advance for any help!

Brian

Brian - I'm not an electrical guy, but when I put the Crane system on my OPUS distributor, I just let all the OE wiring hang free - unused - & redid everything using just the wiring that came with the Crane.

Oh, I finally tossed the OPUS distributor & went with an earlier one.

bmurphy7369,

Just a quick note... I had an '84 XJ6 a few years ago... absolutely loved it.. when it was on the road.. I had to replace the Borg-Warner tranny twice then I finally sold the car...Great car though...

I just talked with Moss about a rear bumper for an MGA - they put a disclaimer in the catalog on line about the quality....they're not happy with that particular bumper either but don't have any other supplier...but, if we order it & never bolt it up (just look at it), they'll take it back....of course we'll have to pay the return shipment but it may be worth it to look at that particular one before settling on it versus rechroming (heck, it might be the thing to do on all bumpers!).....

& I think that's their policy on everything - if you don't like it but also don't install it, they'll take it back.

That's strange, twice for the BW66?
Mine (1975) has the BW65, but having driven both versions, they are odd in the shifting pattern. The problem as I see it is that being a three speed automatic, second gears mph range is too broad. There is an adjustment that isn't too difficult, but this could be what shortens the life span. I had hanging in 2nd gear issues on the 1986, and am noticing a similar issue on the 1975. I think that adjustment is the key, but the feeling of driving in second gear around 50 MPH just seems odd. These cars like the open road much better, and at highway speeds third gear is a joy. I think for future reference you can actually mount a GM transmission to the XK engine, GM350? unit, and it isn't a huge hassle to do so. I hope you don't have any issues on your next Jaguar, and I hope I'm not in for a shock on the XJ6C soon. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif
On the grille and Moss issue, at least give their grey piping a try, it is a perfect match and sets of the re-chromed unit you are planning.....
Best as always,
Brian

Brian,

Yes, the BW66 was the problem... It was going bad when I bought the car so I replaced it with a unit from a wrecking yard. That one lasted about a year. I then replaced it with a second one that lasted until I sold the car about a year later, but it was starting to slip. I was also in need of a lower rebuild since my oil pressure was getting low.

In conversations I had with Jag club members, they all just shook their heads and said that the BWs were just not a solid tranny.

I wanted to keep the car but I was moving at the time and had no time to devote to it. Well, next time I'll do the Hydro350, .. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif

Ron,
Thanks for the tip-off, I've barely put 5,000 miles on any of my SIII's or the SII. I was considering a rebuild to avoid looking for a new replacement, now I am definitely going to do the overhaul. I just read up on the adjustments and considered doing them this weekend, probably a bad idea since it take 5-30 seconds sometimes to go into reverse (the beginning of the end??).
Sorry guys, didn't mean to talk Jag in the MG forum, I no longer have the MGA, but I still love the cars (all MG) and try to keep up on the latest (translation: live vicariously) tips and experiences.

If anyone has a mint MGA I will trade even, swap 1984 BMW 318i parts car....... No takers?? Offer good for 24 hours only.

Brian,

If it takes a while to engage.. sorry to say... the end is in sight... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wall.gif

By the way, when I belonged to the Jag club there was a $5 fine for not driving the Jag to the meetings... they had a ton-o-cash in the kitty.. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Wow, what a deal.. mint condition MGA worth $20K+ for a 318i beamer parts car... humm let me think about it... not.. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/jester.gif

You are more than welcomed to 'live vicariously' on the MG forum. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

That's a great idea!

Steve,

Come to think of it... Maybe I should finally go to an MG Club of San Diego meeting and make myself REAL popular by suggesting it.. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Around here that would ensure nobody came to British car club meetings...

Never were truer words spoken... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Then add a mandatory kick in the butt with a steel-toed boot for anyone not showing to the meeting. Why join a car club if you don't want to drive a car? It doesn't make much sense!
