Son of Torque Wrench

It seems this is a different thread than the other torque wrench discussion. My good friend and mechanic suggests that I loosen the head bolts slightly and then retorque them to spec. Others say just tighten them otherwise there is risk that coolant will leak into the cylinders. What is recommended? T.T.

I have always been told to loosen 1/4 turn, then retighten. If you don't loosen slightly first, you won't know if a nut was already at torque or if it was simply sticking.

Yeah, and if you loosen them a 1/4 turn you shouldn't loose any coolant
