Small Victories.....for Mac

Thanks guys for the response. I'm probably going to go with a blast cabinet for now. I'm not too confident my compressor (33 gal, 6.8 cfm at 40 psi, or 5.1 at 90 psi) would do well with a pressurized tank. I do have 40 ft or so of copper lines with drains and a dryer in the line to hopefully provide dry air. Maybe send the tub out if I can find someone in Virginia area.

Wow your number is very close to my second car TSF18. I did not know that VTR showed the TSF series as a TR3B. I had always thought that only the TCF series were considered the B'S. Kerry where is Moseley?
 
Moseley is near Richmond. A little south and west. If in the area I'll get the address to you and stop by! My TSF does have fully synchro tranny.
 
Well a move forward and a slight setback. I have been trying to finish the removal of the front suspension so I reached out to CJD about my order of process. He directed me to some really helpful info, I formulated my procedure and started the process.

All was was going good until it was time to remove the bump stop and it was fighting me hard, but it swung out of the way....hmm that was weird then I noticed all the debris....

Then it it dawned on me that bolt should be through a mounting hole with support....well the support is right here:

So it appears the frame may not be as solid on the front end as I thought. So now I can at least pull the spring out and move forward pulling down the front end, at least this side. Kinda bummed about the amount of rust but it is what it is. Now to finish the custom spring removal tool.....

Enough for now....back at it later then on to Austin for a quick vacation with family and friends.
 
Great, you got the shocks out! I wouldn't worry too much about the detritus. A lot of that looks like old crusty grease/dirt that flaked off.

By the way...it's getting hot down here in Texas. Pack shorts!
 
Yeah but the detritus included the bottom through mount hole that came out with it so that might be an issue because I need to be able to mount the bump stop back in the frame! Dilemma maybe!

Now to see the destruction, the friiggin Spring. One more side to go but progress none the less. Time for some cleanup, dinner and bagging parts. I did find some odd parts and the rust is bad, mostly need to cut off the bottom bolt on the bump stop to remove it. I need a template for the mount so I can fabricate a repair.

Looks good JP. We are at very similar stages of front suspension disassembly. I'm now starting to clean parts. I haven't found degreasers to work all that well. Maybe I need to let things soak longer. I did start blasting some parts. I bought a Tractor Supply bench top cabinet. Pleasantly surprised. It leaks some around the door seal but the rest of the joints are tight. The TS sales guy talked me into medium Black Diamond media probably because he didn't have fine grit (actually coal slag I believe). Not too impressed. It works and doesn't make a mess, although plugged up more, but it seemed to leave a pretty rough surface. So I switched to 80 grit ground glass. Rarely did this plug up the siphon intake. I like the surface this provides (see picture, the wishbone at bottom of picture was blasted with medium Black Diamond, the wishbone at top with ground glass). Although as John alluded to it is much more prone to a dusty cabinet making it hard to see and I got more leakage around the door. So I added an adapter for a shop vac attachment. Much better.
Leads to a question. What needs protected when blasting?? Machined parts like the stub axle seem obvious, but what about the "eyes" in the wishbones where rubber of nylon bushes go or the vertical link where the ball joint attaches. Or any threads.

So here we are at the next stage of disassembly and not quite at the same speed as Cheftush but progress. My little so called power hour was to get the rear end disconnected from the frame and off of the car:

The next step is a slight cleanup and flip the frame around so I can access the other spring to finish off the disassembling the front suspension drivers side!

So we are in full Crew race mode, my kid is a rower so Saturday between the hours of 6 am to 4:40 pm I was supporting her team! I also tried welding again later when I got back and was frustrated beyond belief! I looked online for a used welder, did a lot of reading then almost pulled the trigger on a used Lincoln unit but the guy would not meet my price. Fast forward to today and found a new Hobart Handler 140 on sale with a coupon code and then got them to price match another competitor. My order is processed and awaiting shipping information, next on the list is to list some spare parts so I can get the gas bottle and start dialing in my "lack of" welding skills. I think I should have payed more attention when I was anxious to pick up a welder the first go around.

That is it for now now except I have another busy weekend with Crew stuff on Saturday and the 20th Anniversary of Britain on the Green car show by the Capital Triumph Group on Sunday! https://www.capitaltriumphregister.com/bog/
My son is going to participate as a judge in the Haggerty Youth judging competition. He is beyond excited!

New tools...cool! A decent welder is a great investment. You'll find a ton of projects outside of auto work that it will help with.

Label the box and possible put before photos in the box as a reminder for later when you reassemble.

So here is what has been going on, I set a date this weekend to go to a buddy's house and do some blast work! It may cost me some IPA beer but that is OK! I had a generous soon to be former Tr3 owner donate a bunch of parts to my restoration cause, like a windshield, wiper motor, gas cap and 3 or 4 other boxes! His Tr3 is up to a pretty nice dollar amount and bid is closing tomorrow, I believe. I have a break on the rowing homefront so no regatta commitment until next weekend. That is about it for now.
